q6600 vs phenom 2 720 x3

i was thinking of selling my q6600 and mobo and getting a phenom 2 720....would anybody on this forum think this is a good idea?

i mainly play games so i dont care abt encoding benchmarks and so on but would a 720 coupled with an hd5870 and 785g mobo be a better rig then the one with a q6600?

I'm not convinced it's a good move and it would seem like a wasted effort.

It might be if you didn't already have a decent CPU. No point for you.

the FSB of your Q6600 might be a limiting factor when it comes to bandwidth, so if you're worried I'd recommend overclocking your FSB from 266Mhz to 400Mhz (most recent <2yr old motherboards support this and can be done very easily) and decreasing the multiplier on your chip if you don't want to overclock your cpu. This helps feed the often bandwidth starved Q6600 (it is a quaddie after all) and you should see an improvement in performance of the new high-end gpus. The Phenom X3 would perform pretty much identical if not slower than your current Q6600 so it wouldn't be much of an upgrade.
