    Strange whining noise

I recently started using ATI tool on my computer and during it there is a really irritiating whining noise coming from my computer. I've not noticed it during anything else as of yet but i'll start looking later on. The sound seems to be localised to the graphics card (GTX260 Black Edition). Does this mean its faulty as its pretty irriating and haven't noticed it before. Any help would be appreciated!

    Re: Strange whining noise

depending on how loud it is its normal for graphics cards, when under load, to have a whining noise.

    Re: Strange whining noise

Try adjusting the fan speed in CCC under ATI Overdrive - my 4850's fan makes a whining noise at some speeds. It's most likely coil whine though. If it's under warranty I think you might be able to get it swapped especially if it didn't used to do it or if it's out of warranty applying hot glue to the coils works for most people.

    Re: Strange whining noise

i dont think its the fan as thats set @ 40% using rivatuner and it is only during certain applications. the gpu version of folding@home also makes a similar noise as well as some game menus (crysis springs to mind as a main culprit) i've read a few articles online about coil whine. could it possibly be that?

    Re: Strange whining noise

Yes it's the normal capacity squeal. It usually happens when the card is displaying an absurdly high framerate, which often happens in menus for games. You can enable v-sync to cap the framerates and prevent it, or just ignore it, it's not harmful or any indication of a fault, just annoying.
