    Question Buying a new laptop

    hi everyone,

I am looking to purchase a new laptop. My old compaq presario r3000 is far too heavy and slow for me now.

I was looking at netbooks due to their size as I will be using whatever I buy in college.
This laptop is coming to a shop nearby http://www.lidl.ie/ie/home.nsf/pages...aveller_Laptop

The processor seems good enough(far better than an Atom), it has vista home premium as far as I know. The one thing that puzzles me is the graphics chipset- a geforce go 6100 with 256mb gddr3 vram.

The 6100 as far as I know is from 2005/2006, but would the one in this laptop be any good equipped with gddr3 memory.

I would like to play a couple of games on it when on holidays etc, I know it wont play anything at high resolutions our detail - I have my computer for that.

So what do you think of the Targa laptop seen in the link above given the price? (€449.99)

    Here's the manufacturers website http://www.targa.co.uk/index.jsp?SID...AREA=undefined

it lists the graphics chipset as "upto 380mb"

    Re: Buying a new laptop

Looks nice enough - just be a little wary of that AMD CPU..they have a repuation for heat in their mobile chips. Will be fine just might be a bit hot

Whats your budget? So you can compare whats out there..not really heard much about Targa as a laptop brand which would put me off a bit.

    Re: Buying a new laptop

Well i'd like to spend around €400 or less. I went online to dell.ie and found a laptop for €420 with a celeron t3000 1.8ghz cpu but now I just checked again and that processor is no longer an option to choose from.

The Targa laptop looks a bit "old" or cheap compared to other laptops I have seen.
I'm going into curry's today to have a look at what they have.
I am going to use Ubuntu linux on whatever I get, at least until Windows 7.

Any thoughts on netbooks. I like my computers to be nice and fast and not lag when watching video's etc, I have a core i7 in my pc and I'm afraid that if I get a netbook with an Atom cpu, I might find it too much slower and therefore want to get rid of it.

So what do you think, a cheap notebook or a netbook?

    EDIT: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...N0054502&s=dhs
Thats the dell laptop with the celeron t3000. Not sure if the link will work so here are the specs:
    -Intel Celeron dual core t3000 1.8ghz, 1mb L2 cache
-Vista home premium with windows 7 upgrade eligible (64-bit)
    -15.6" 1366x768
    -4096mb 800mhz ddr2 ram (2x2048mb)
    -Intel gma 4500mhd
    -6 cell battery
    -250 gb hdd 5400 rpm

-> €418.99 incl. vat and delivery

As I have said above I wont be using Vista but may use Windows 7 when released.
What do you think of the dell laptop?
