    Stealthing Drives - SN41G2

I have seen a few examples of stealthed drives using the standard blanking plates on the shuttles.

What is the best way to do this as the screws that hold the assembly together are exposed a good 5mm the other side, so causing obstruction to fixing to the face plate of an optical drive.

If anyone could fill me in on how they did theirs, I would be most greatful

I haven't got my shuttle yet, so I don't know 100% what the exact physiology of the drive bay is, but for my LianLi and Sony CDRW, I took a few small pieces of (2x1cm, 3mm thick) acryllic, sandwiched them together, and hot-glued them to the cd tray. I then hot-glued the baycover to the stuck-on acrylic.

If there are screws protruding from the inside part, then I suppose you could sandwich a few pieces of acryllic (or whatever other plastic you might have), and drill a hole for the screws to pass through.

Of course, the cd drive would sit a little further back into the case than it would normally, but the effect is generally, quite good. The hot glue and sandwiched acryllic also gave pretty effective results in terms of leverage and the eject button.

Hope that helps a little :>

has anybody considered actually using the screws to attach the bay cover to the drivetray, or are they too short?

Well they should be of sufficient length to go about it that way, but im not sure if I would like to drill holes in the drive door to be honest. Seen a lot of shuttles with the standard blanking plates used, what was your method? - question to the people who have done so

Double sided stick tape. Using the 3mm thick variety my stealth drive looks pretty slick and took 13 seconds to do.

Was that using the original blanking plates?
What did you do about the screws?

If you're willing to hack of the part of the blanking plate that holds it to the shuttle case, why not drill a hole into the fron of your drive? All in the name of modding!! If you just keep stealthing that drive in whatever case you stick it in, those holes will never bother you!

Yeah good point, I'll probably give it a go when the shuttle arrives If worst comes to worst i can always use the spare CM drive bezel I have But would be nice to have the drive conforming with the 'bodywork' of the shuttle

Has anybody ever considered hooking the eject button to the shuttles reset button? If youre like me, you dont touch that reset button more than once or twice in a decade. But then again, I dont own a shuttle yet...(any sponsors)

Just an idea I just had..

No point in doing that mate, because if you ever did need to use the reset button then you couldn't. Using the eject function in the right-mouse-click popup menu would work fine.

Even modding another switch or button on the front panel would be an idea tho

Something else i was thinking about, was to swap the orange HDD activity LED (orange) for a white one, or any other far more sexual colour?

I have an SN41G2 and I tooke the screws out of my front panel, cut the thread off so there was only the nead left then glued the aluminium part to the plastic panel, then glued the screw heads in place, then used double sided adhesive foam to attach the lot to the drive and my eject button works fine, I just have to press the bottom right corner of the panel.

For the gluing did you use super glue or a glue gun?

Sorry about the delay, I was away for the weekend. I actually used a small tube of wood glue to secure the screws in place as i couldnt find my impact adhesive at the time. Also the screws become a purely decorative item when turning the plate into a stealthed drive so there is no need to use a particularly strong glue to hold them in place. The emphasis is all on making sure the bay looks as similar to a standard blanking plate as possible so use a clear glue that wont make a mess.

    No worries mate

I just used some super glue in the end to glue the two panels together (aluminium and plastic) and the screws in the sunk holes.

Just waiting for my shuttle now lol
