New Samsung F3 or WD Caviar Black

Due to delays in getting some of my components its given me a bit more time to have a scout around and the new samsung F3's have caught my eye and i'm tempted to put a 1TB or 500GB F3 in my i5 build i'm doing. Are these better than the 1TB/500GB caviar blacks? I've also noticed the warranty on the F3's is 2 years less than the WDC's so would the extra cost of a WDC be worth it?
Definately think i'm just going to have to take the plunge soon and finish this build as parts are changing on a daily basis at the minute!

The f3 looks good and pretty quick too. Worth it in my opinion.

there's no doubt its well worth the money in the slightest, i'm just wondering if its worth paying the extra for the WDC Black because of the extended warranty. Hopefully the F3's will be a bit more reliable than the F1's as well. Is there a big performance difference between the 2?

The F3 wins in sequential transfer against 333GB/platter Caviar Black. I suspect it may well be faster overall. However, the 500GB/platter Caviar Black is probably due soon (but F3 should win in terms of value for money).

I'd say the F3 because it's faster than any current WD black (and it's very cheap too).

for the 1TB version, unless you can buy a 2-platter version, the F3 will certainly faster.
For 2TB, F3 is not even available (I would love a 1.5TB version like the F2).

There are only a few 500GB/platter drives out there, most of them 5400/5900RPM, apart from Samsung F3 500G/1T and WD Black 2TB.

And as such there isn't really a choice, apart from the capacity you want to get.

The Seagate 7200.12 500GB increment drives are 500GB/platter too.

Re: New Samsung F3 or WD Caviar Black

well i just want a fast drive for programs, games etc. if the F3 is faster then I'll prob go for that (and save a few pennies as well). The main temptation for the WDC is just the extra warranty as the computers not for me so if parts do fail its nice knowing there is backup there.

I know it's not a completely valid point, but if the drive fails 3-5 years from now, you'll probably find that a replacement 1TB drive is cheap as chips anyway.
In the meantime, enjoy the faster transfer rates .

(Just advise the guy your building it for to implement a proper backup regime regardless. Warranty doesn't make hard drive failure any less pleasant, regardless of who makes the drive )

Samsung F3 500Gb, for both performance and value for money! I made a similar topic recently with some HD Tune results

My F3 should be here tomorrow £38 delivered @ Scan!

QFT - backing up important data is a must, regardless of what drive you use. It's hard to get it across to people that it's important but anyone who's ever lost data because they didn't back it up should understand fully. Also remember it's very easy to accidentally delete a folder containing something you didn't want to delete...

thats what i've said. going to order a 1TB F3 for him, one for me and I'm going to give him one of my older hard drives to back everything up onto and to do it regularly. Main stuff will be his my documents folder and programs, which I'll show how to do an image backup of the drive anyway, just hope he remembers to do it!
