Sky Box -> Rig -> Monitor?

Due to a new offer from Sky, my housemates think I'll be able to get a Sky+ box in my room for only £3 per month (I'm not convinced tbh, but its worth looking at).

My trusty old monitor only has a VGA port, so I'd need to get some kind of card to process the signal.

I'm not looking to spend much as I don't have much interest, but for a couple of quid a month its worth looking at.

    Any suggestions?

Re: Sky Box -> Rig -> Monitor?

Even if that cable works (most aren't wired properly), a VGA monitor is unlikely to support the 15khz signal. Check your screens H sync range to verify. Those cables are mainly aimed at projectors.

You need a scart to vga converter, which will set you back £60 for something cheap and roughly £100 for something decent (JS are the best bang for buck converters - http://www.js-technology.com/).

Re: Sky Box -> Rig -> Monitor?

It can be done, but you'll need an analogue tv tuner to accept the signal from the Sky+ box (using the RF2 output), and then tune the card to the appropriate channel. Probably not worth the aggro though.

WinTV HVR-900 USB stick will do that for about £35

just connect rf-out from sky into this.. thats what I use it for most of the time
(though this model also has an inbuild digital freeview tuner in it as well as an added bonus.

Re: Sky Box -> Rig -> Monitor?

Assuming you have a computer one of these should do the trick - you'll also need a splitter to convert a scart to component out or s-video but they're dead cheap

You don't need a TV tuner - that's the whole point of the Sky box. A video capture card will take the live stream from the Sky box and play it on your computer.

As an aside, if you have any old VHS videos it'll also take the output from a video player and allow you to rip your videos to hard drive (which is the reason I got something similar to this several years ago). One proviso with this though - I had real problems finding software that would encode the video and audio in sync...

Wouldnt a TV card sort all this out :S
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: Sky Box -> Rig -> Monitor?

I have connected my Sky+ box to a TV tuner using the S-Video output.

Picture is pretty good (significantly better than RF) and most TV tuners have a S-Video input now too...

I tried a Scart>D-Sub before and it didn't work, S-Video was the next best option (which isn't on the normal Sky boxes, just Sky+ & HD).
