    USB to Serial adaptors

This may be a stupid question, but is there more than one type of USB to serial adaptor? Reason I ask is at work we've got some specialist equipment that connects to a PC via a serial port, works fine on a serial cable but as soon as we try a USB to serial adaptor to run it off a laptop, they don't.

We've tried a couple of different adaptors (though both cheap) and had no luck. Any suggestions on a possible fix to the issue?

    Re: USB to Serial adaptors

this is a common issue with timings on USB->RS232 adapters.

There are a couple of different chips out there that do the conversion, but they are all a bit dodgy depending on the application.

The problem is rs232 has a massive range of input/output voltage, from 3 to 15 volts.

And some devices are very sensative about the timing.
