    Motherboard...

Right, its time to purchase the part I hate (because I just don't know the difference between any of them)... the motherboard.

    I have a p4 2.4
    I will have 512mb PC2700 memory.

I don't want to spend much on it at all, so looking round ebay I see an AsRock mobo for £15-25 quid. Any opinion on this mobo? And cheap recommendations of others?

    Ta!

what matters most with a motherboard is the chipset it uses. without knowing what the chipset is, it's impossible to say anything

afterwards you can consider a brand & its reliability record, etc

i845 is very good, but supports a maximum front side bus of 133 (533 quad pumped). my board is i845

    the modern p4 chipsets are i865 & i875

There is also the 848 - which is the 845 (single DDR channel) with improved memory latencies and 800MHz FSB support - it's generally quite cheap to. The last two generations of intel chipsets have been very reliable and fast (just don't mention the i820...)

No experience of the Sis 65x's - anyone else?
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

Steer clear of Via P4 chipsets at all costs.

The SiS 655 is supposed to be okay, the 651 is poor. I always thought the 648 was good though...

Anyway, try for another 845 one, or perhaps, an 848 one if possible...
