    Quads and Cards

with the imminent arrival of win7 in the next few weeks - for which i'm waiting for a copy of pro, i'm thinking of a couple of minor upgrades.

firstly is the cpu, currently have a e6750 in which is now 2+ years old. which current quaddy could be considered the best for price/performance? i have a relatively new (only 3-4 month old) p5q-deluxe so not even gonna consider i7, so it would be something from the q8xxx or q9xxx range.

secondly, the gfx. my 8800gts feels like it's starting to drag it's sorry ass now - system feels like the gfx needs a caffine fix to go sometimes. now i wouldn't be looking to go silly on a new one as i don't/can't game as much as i used to (little 'un doesn't give me time to at home and working more and more away). not to fussed either nvidia or ati, but again looking for opinions over price/performance and ability to smoothly handle cod4/css and maybe mw2.

i have ideas, but want other opinions to compare against.

    Re: Quads and Cards

Not sure if i would bother with the 8 series quads, i would say go for a 9400 minimum, its only about £15 more then the 8400 same speed but 50% more cache.

As for graphics, considering you admit you don't have the time much atm i would say go for a gtx260 / 4850 or 4870. All can be had for around £100 give or take a few ££ depending on clocks etc.

    Re: Quads and Cards

Good time to be upgrading behind the curve as all the must haves are getting rid of high end last gen hardware to get the latest and greatest (cpu and gpu) and also the etailers have to lower their prices now the new hardware is out. Also, nvidia should be releasing in the next month or so so should help with prices even more.

If you game @ 1920*1080 (judjing by your monitor) then a 1gig 4870 / gtx260 216 should be plenty. msi 4870 1gig on ebuyer or gainward gts260 @ £110 on scan today only

You could probably drop down further if you don't game much at all, 512mb 4870s appear well below £100, older 260 with 192 sp at same price (I have a 512mb 4870 on my main pc and game at 1600 *1200)
