Is this a good bargain? The only other thing I would have liked is a bluray drive but for another £250, I think not. If anyone has any other recommendations, please let me know.

    Thanks

    Andy

Not sure it's a bargain but it seems fair for the price. Low warranty though on an expensive laptop.

It's got the 3yr extended warranty included in that

Enhanced Service Packs 3Yr In-Home Warranty Support, including evenings and Saturdays
I've decided if I'm going to pay this much I want warranty to cover anything going wrong

Oh right missed it, just saw 1 year.

Yeah that is very good then. As you say just a shame about the blu ray drive, the slot loads are a pain to upgrade.

Re: Is this a bargain - dell laptop

I figure I wouldn't watch that many blu-rays on it anyway, mostly dvds from dvd rental. Interestingly I just specced up a similar PC system, using the same or similar performance parts, including monitor, keyboard, mouse, OS and other gubbins and to build myself it would cost more than the laptop and I wouldn't have the no hassle 3yr warranty!

It seems that way but assuming they do honour it (I'm sure the legal side gets a bit cloudy when dealing with custom products) it will still be a bogo warranty not the superior on site jobby.

I heard Dell do student discount but never found the way to actually do it.

Specwise the quad core looks extremely slow (1.6Ghz). Turbo mode only overclock 1 core and "disable" the other 3. In reality it is so hard to trigger that turbo mode (at least on the C2D I had anyway) I had to disable the turbo mode as it mess up my optimized power profile (through RMClock).

It is down to how devoted you're in optimizing your usage pattern so that your CPU can run in the high end of the turbo mode, which could means you might as well get a high-end core2duo which is 2.6~3Ghz to start with.
