    Asus R2E fan control?

    hello,

I'm looking at purchasing the Asus Rampage II extreme motherboard, but I'm finding it incredibly difficult to find any information whatsoever on the board's fan control system.

I am currently using an Abit IP-35 pro XE, which uses the fantastic uGuru system. It's hardware based, and you can configure temperature/RPM scales yourself.

Does the Asus board use anything similar to this? I've had a look round, and all I can find mention of is "Q-fan", the hardware based fan controller. Would this allow me to control how fast fans spin and at what temperatures?

    Thanks!

    Re: Asus R2E fan control?

    Yes

You have to install their software: Q-Fan. But it is actually quite good. You can set how fast the fans spin at certain temperatures e.g. 1200rpm @ 30C, 1300rpm @ 40c, etc. Or you can set it to as quiet or as fast as possible all the time.

    Just like that "uGuru"

    or

You can set it to preset profiles in Bios e.g. Silent, Turbo, so you don't have to install the software if you don't want to.

    Re: Asus R2E fan control?

    hello,

Thanks for your fast reply mate.

I've actually found a copy of the motherboard manual on the internet, and, from what I've read, it seems you are only able to control the "temp/RPM" scales for the CPU fan and the chassis fan. And it seems you can only have the chassis fan change speed with changes in the system temperature reading, rather than the CPU temp. Have I understood correctly?

Also, do you have to have this software running all the time, or can you open it, set the parameters, and close it?

Finally, in the BIOS, when you set "high" and "low" temperatures for the OPT fans, is there a smooth variance of RPM between the two, or does the fan RPM suddenly spike once you hit the "high" threshold? I'm assuming you have 3 sets of temperature settings, one for each sensor and fan.

    Thanks!

that should tell you all you need to know about the fan control, dont ask what speeds qfan works at as i never tried it

i may give it a bash and butcher the 3 noctua fans into the cpu header at some stage, but im in no rush.

    the temp probes 400mm

i tried to reply to your pm but your folders full !

    Re: Asus R2E fan control?

Sorry to bring this up again dude, but do you think those temperature probes are water proof?

I was going to strap them to my water-cooling radiator fins, monitor the coolant temperature that way, but I think I'd end up with more accurate readings if I simply had them dipped in the reservoir? I could seal the top with some sellotape or something rather than that screw-type thingy you would otherwise use.

    Re: Asus R2E fan control?

all you need do it tape them to a barb as it conducts the heat. yes the ends are waterproof but the system will be under pressure and you are asking for it.
should it leak and follow the cable you kiss bye bye to a very expensive motherboard if you dont spot it in time, and it doesnt matter if your coolants none conductive if enough pools up.

    Re: Asus R2E fan control?

Ideally you would put a T piece in the tube and araldite the probe into the TEE so that it is in contact with the liquid - but of course yiou don't want to restrict the flow, and as Gonzo says, any leeak is going to do your mobo no good at all.

While that would give you the maost accurate temperature (assuming that the probes are callibrated) the absolute temperature isn't that important - accuracy to the nearest couple of degrees is sufficient. What IS important is the trend - a sudden dramatic change in temperature, or a gradual upward trend is the important bit, and again, as Gnxo says, strapping the probe to the barbs will suffice to give you that information.

in other news, t-balancer do a water probe in 8 or 10mm i think, along with a few others, and afaik the connectors the same type.

    Re: Asus R2E fan control?

    Didn't see these new posts.

    Thanks for the advice though.

It does seem strapping the probe to a barb is the most sensible way to do it (I'm assuming it's best to do it on the input barb of the radiator, where the water would be hottest?). However, the problem is not how well changes in temperature are detected, but what the actual temperatures are.

Unfortunately, with this motherboard, the fans won't spin at 100% until you hit 60C (shown in Gozno's photos, "OPT_FAN"). I seriously doubt the coolant could ever reach this temperature without the CPU being damaged. Let alone the barb.

If I'm wrong, then fantastic. If I am right however, I think I might have come up with a solution. If the temp probes are thermistors, then I could wire up the probe in series with a fan controller (they come with the case fans). I could use trial and error to alter the amount of resistance in the circuit, and increase the "detected" temperature.

Of course though, I wouldn't have to do this if Asus could have put a little more thought into how they designed their BIOS.

    Re: Asus R2E fan control?

thats only the optional fans, you could quite happily use the qfan to control the fan speed using the cpu socket diode, that should spin up the fans under full load above 4ghz as it will hit 60 degrees easy, its got the silent, normal and turbo settings so you should be able to find a happy medium. qfan controls both the case fans, not the optional fans as well.

at the end of the day if you locate the sensors near the source of the heat it will spin up to keep the water cool.
