i7-720QM Dell Laptop Deal, Is It Worth It???

I've been looking for a laptop for a while now and I came across this:

    Studio 15
    Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Mobile Processor (1.6GHz, turbo up to 2.8GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1 (64 BIT) - English
    Microsoft® Works 9.0 / English - (Does not include Microsoft® Word)
1 Year Limited Warranty - Collect & Return
    No Security/Anti-Virus Protection - English
    No Accidental Damage Support
15.6in Widescreen High Definition (1366x768) WLED with TrueLife
    4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]
320GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HP 4570
Fixed Internal DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive including Software
Primary 6-cell 56 WHr Lithium Ion battery
    Dell Wireless 1397 Mini Card (802.11 b/g)
2.0 Mega pixel Integrated Web Camera
    Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard

    Total £662.57 with student discount

    Sounds like a beast but.....

The i7-720QM is new so i wanted to know if it was any good or at least if its worth it for this price or whether it is better to stick with a solid dual core

Will be used for mainly uni stuff but also some gaming, team fortress 2, left 4 dead

    offer will end soon

Re: i7-720QM Dell Laptop Deal, Is It Worth It???

It is indeed a cracking deal but I personally feel the quad is running way too slow. It is effectively a dual, unless there is some way to get around the turbo boost limit. Power wise certainly the voltage can be reduced resulting in a large drop in power requirement as in Core2 mobile chips.

Say if its like 3.06Ghz (Single) / 5.6Ghz (Dual) / 6.0Ghz (Triple) / 6.4Ghz (Quad) [Note the CPU might not even hit that kind of speed!] assuming you use fully multi-threaded programs, the performance gain from using more than 2 threads is minimal (more threads -> reduced efficiency). Might as well permanently disable two of the cores. And the closest upgrade is like extra 400 quids for a 820!

Re: i7-720QM Dell Laptop Deal, Is It Worth It???

Just remembered where i saw that fast dual core with 512MB GDDR3 ATi Radeon HD 4650

    http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/index....ect=enigma#top

    Comes to around 660 quid

Only problem is that its ugly but i think i can live with that

let me know what you think

    with a T9400 (2.53GHz) it comes to 675 quid

Re: i7-720QM Dell Laptop Deal, Is It Worth It???

Are you going to get a dual-core that runs at the same speed as its turbo-mode though, in a sense your buying a cpu that is as good as any solo/dual/tri out there and then still by having the quad-core futureproofing yourself in the process.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
