HDD Crunching?

hey guys,
Ever since I bought my new HDD along with my new motherboard (about 3 months ago) it seems to make a weird sound which I can only describe as a kind of crunching when starting up either from a clean boot or from standby. It is most noticeable on resume from standby as the pc seems to freeze for around 5-10 seconds whilst it makes this sound and then everything resumes normally. I have run chkdsk on it and it came up as fine so I don't know what is causing this. I always assumed it was a motherboard issue but as the motherboard was just a temporary solution I didn't bother investigating. However now it turns out the motherboard is going to be permenant I am hoping to sort this problem out because although the system pause I can live with the sound is doing my head in. The hdd in question is a 1.5TB Samsung F2 drive. Anybody got any ideas as to what it could be?

Ok this is driving me crazy. Whats happening is if I resume from standby the desktop appears, and then everything freezes and I hear the disks spin up and then theres a clicking sound constantly from anywhere between 5-20 seconds. If it wasn't for the fact that the disks seems to work fine and chkdsk said its fine I'd say it sounded like it was in pieces inside its case. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe some other tool I can try to check the disk?

Any kind of noise like that from a HDD tends to be a problem with the HDD. Different drivers or motherboard should not make a normal HDD make a noise like that.

The only other thing it could be is that the drive is not secured properly. Failing that I would definately say it was a HDD issue.

Could you make a recording of the sound? Just it's normal for Samsungs to make a distinctive noise on startup...

Some disks make a lot of noise when coming to life. If you get the manufacturer's diagnostic tools (usually obtainable as a bootable ISO) you can run a test on the disk and see if it's doing anything it shouldn't.

Sorry to revive an old thread but its the same issues so no point in starting a new one.
Basically after running the samsung tool on the disk above it showed no errors but it still made the clicking sound on resume which could freeze the pc on resume for up to 20 seconds. I rma'd it and ebuyer confirmed it was faulty and sent me a replacement drive. Just installed the new drive today and guess what... same issue. So before I rma it for them to send me another drive do you guys think I just got another faulty drive or is it possible this is just what these samsungs do, hence why they are usually not used for boot drives?

Samsung drives are used by plenty of people on these forums alone with no issues. As I said Samsungs do make a distinctive noise but it shouldn't cause any problems - do you have a camera or a microphone you could use to make a recording of the noise? Oh and BTW when your computer freezes see if you can navigate using the keyboard - sometimes it's just the mouse that's unresponsive for a while after resuming.

My Samsung F3 makes virtually no noise, the Seagate on the other hand has a very distincitve spin-up noise.

I can move the mouse around but if I actually try to do anything eg click start menu, or use the keyboard is will freeze until the clicking stops. I'll try and make a recording so you can hear it and see what you think.
I only own samsuing hdd's (about 7 lol) and none of them make this sound. I just thought maybe because it a 5400rpm as opposed to the usual 7200rpm drive that this may be normal. Guess not.

Would recommend disable NCQ? That happened to me.

Make sure in BIOS SATA mode is set to IDE, not AHCI.

I made a recording of the sound on my phone but its in amr format and I can't find a program to convert it (that doesn't look dodgy), soon as I do I'll post it

As mentioned I previously mine is actually un-noticable and its half exposed out fo the case (Imoved my hard drives to where the floppy drive was). The Seagate i've got on the other hand does have a noticable noise when spinning up but after its up and running its quiet again.

Mine is an aluminium SFF case which tends to magnify any hard disk sounds!! In normal operation the disk is quiet but it is only if the disk powers up I hear this. I can hear the disk start to spin up which is followed by a click. The computer does not freeze or anything like that. After that I hardly hear the disk. I wonder if the click sound are the heads moving into position out of the rest position? If this is normal it is fine but if it isn't then it is cause for concern.
