Realtek 889a vs VIA VT1828s vs Realtek 888

    Hello,

Before reading a P55 mobos review at the TechReport I though that Realtek 889a and VIA VT1828s should perform the same but it looks like 889a scores a point better in almost all of the RightMark Audio Analyzer benchmark. I am not familiar with RightMark and don't know if the scores have any relevance to normal use. Do you know if the difference between two chips can be audible in every day use?

Also, how does VT1828s compare to the older Realtek 888 and is that true that I should avoid VIA codecs?

Thanks a lot in advance for your answers and suggestions.

Depends on your speaker set up and personal fidelity tolerance.

Personally, yes, I'd avoid the VIA codec and go for a realtek 889chipset if I had the choice, but that's assuming the rest of the motherboard is identical. If the sound quality is enough to influence your buying decision much then consider getting an expansion card anyway, which will beat all of them.

Yes, the rest of the specification would be comparable. The problem is that to get a 889a mobo I'd have to spend much more than on the similar board with VIA ....or I could get something with Realtek 888 which would be slightly lower specified board but still should work ok for me and get a dedicated sound card with the money I'd save on a board. Do you know what card I should get to make the whole thing worthwhile without going overboard?
