new router
can anyone suggest a good router for me thats easy to setup and reliable. im intiially going to use it for my 1meg adsl connection, and to later use it wirelessy to connect to my xbox which is downstairs and to a laptop. or a router that could be used later to connect direct to the ethernet port on the xbox and then use the wireless aspect to allow a laptop and pc to connect upto the internet through it

What about http://www.netgear.com/products/prod...php?prodID=223 ? Available at dabs for £104.57 http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/hard...quicklinx=2VCD. SPI firewall, ADSL modem, 10/100 switch, 802.11g supported. Basically everything in one box. OK, it'd be nice if it was a print server as well, but still...Netgear stuff is pretty reliable, and very easy to deal with.
Linksys are very good also: http://www.linksys.com/international...oid=6&ipid=212 available for £92.82 http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/hard...quicklinx=2Z9M
As to networking your Xbox, I don't own one, so frankly have NO idea about networking them, but both of these products have wired and wireless capability, work at 54Mbps, have a DSL modem built in, have SPI firewalls, should be easy to set up and reliable. Just remember:
1. Change SSID name from the default to something non-obvious
2. Disable SSID broadcast
3. Use the highest level of WEP that all your devices can support, or better yet use WiFi Protected Access encryption
4. Restrict wireless access to designated MAC addresses
...and I'm sure other people will come up with additional points :)

The WET54G looks good for your Xbox, on the router side I'd be cautious that with that router, whichever ISP you're with would have to provide a DSL modem with an ethernet port on the back. Some are (so I understand - I'm on cable modem at home :D ) USB-only, which could knacker you. Then again, if you're already hooked up via ADSL, you can check the modem you've already got - if there's a Cat5 socket on the back, you're laughing, so yes, that should be fine.

good point ive just realised that myself. would have to look at the wag54g i think

The Netgear Router/modems are fantastic.
I've got the 814G which is the wired one, and my 'rents are on wireless using the 834g which from my experience is fine, easy to unpack and go.
My 2 pennies

I have a DG814 wired modem/router/switch and it is very good, but it does seem to lock up very easily. I have recently been sent a replacement one because of what now seems to have been a bt line problem as it just fixed it self before I received the replacement, but I havn't really had many problems with it since I hooked up the replacement so maybe it was just the other being slightly faulty :)
