    Exclamation Laser Printer question...

    Hey,

We've got a Xerox Phaser 6120 here, and the display is showing "Imaging Unit Out" - however it seems to be printing perfectly fine!

On the web management thingy, it's showing usage as:

    Total Pages
    Color: 1879
    Monochrome: 8343
However, in supplies status it shows:

    Imaging Unit
    45000 Images Max
    (or 11250 Color Pages)
So it seems like the unit still has plenty of life left in it! Is there any adverse effect if we keep using the same unit until it actually dies? Or will this use up more ink, decrease print quality etc? We have a new unit on standby, but just trying to work out if this is a scam by Xerox to sell more consumables!

    Cheers,

    Su

Yup - but I guess the printer recognises it's the same unit and displays the same error message...

    Re: Laser Printer question...

You won't cause any damage to anything else by not replacing the imaging unit
Quality may drop over time however. Reaplcing teh unit will solve that.
If I were you I'd ignore it until I see the quality drop.

if the imaging unit also stores waste toner it may explain it, there may also be a reset if you google the engineers mode.

I can't remember. I heard it somewhere a few years ago.

I didn't think of that! All of our Xerox printers at work have a seperate waste toner container, but they are pretty big devices.

i know the epson ones have a window you can break off once you empty the unit, you clean it up and glue it back on until next time

I'll have a look in the manual about the waste toner GoNz0, cheers

This model is a rebranded Konica IIRC (if that helps!).

well if you don't have a separate waste toner box then its a fair bet its in the imaging unit.

    Re: Laser Printer question...

So you mean all the gunk is actually stored in the unit?! I've scanned the manual and there is no mention of cleaning waste toner. Is there a ghetto way of doing it? I imagine it will involve dismantling the imaging unit...

    Cheers,

    Su

    Re: Laser Printer question...

yeh you have to take it apart, there may be a small clear windows sticking out on it thats getting toner in it. if you find out how to open it you need to make sure the windows clear as well. i have no idea about your model so its a bit of guess work.

    Re: Laser Printer question...

Is this personal or a business printer?
If personal I'd look into hacking the imaging unit yourself. If it's business I'd either just get another imaging unit or give the suppliers hassle till they sort it for you.

Personally I'd badger your supplier about the clearly faulty part if you've had it for 3 months or less.

    Re: Laser Printer question...

    Ever changed it before?
If all is working well I'd wonder if someone had already changed the imager and not reset the maintenance counter.
