PC turns on for 1 second then turns off.

I just bought some PC parts and attempted to build my own PC, the parts are.

    Intel Core i5 750 2.66G s1156
    MSI P55-GD65
    4GB 2x2GB Corsair XMS3 Dominator
    650W BeQuiet Modular PSU
Noctua NH-U12P-E SE1366 (With a kit to use it on 1156)
    HD4890 VAPOUR-X
    Antec 902

    750GB HD
    Samsung Sata DVD drive

I first put the PC together and it was booting but the DVD drive wouldn't open, so I checked to see if there were any loose cables inside and reconnected the DVD drive in case it was loose. This time the PC turned on and the drive worked.

After taking a break I came back to install the OS but the DVD drive wouldn't open again, so I opened it again and checked again. Only difference is this time the PC turns on for 1 second then turns off.

I was wondering if this could be a PSU issue? Could 650watts not be enough for this? Though I find that hard to imagine. Also, I connected the Antec fans to the PSU, which I think should be fine but my only concern is if the Big Boy fan supplied in the Antec case will be able to receive enough power as it needs a lot.

I bought my parts from scan and will be using scansure to have them check it out but I decided to have the communities input as I would like to know if it was something I could have done wrong.

    Look forward to input.

Re: PC turns on for 1 second then turns off.

Remove all the connections to the motherboard except the power, cpu & cpu fan, front panel, one stick of ram, and the graphics card.
    Then try booting it up.

If that works, add in the components and other connections one by one to see if you can identify the problem.

Would be very surprised if it's a PSU issue as 650W should be plenty.

    +1 Stavros.
I have a more power hungry rig with a similar spec and it runs OK from 750w.
If you have a spare optical drive, I'd try that first. It sounds like that's the most obvious problem.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

I already tried that, sorry should have mentioned it.

The samething happens, the PC turns on for about 1 second since the lights go on then it turns off again.

Edit: Could it be a problem with the CPU in anyway?

    Hmmm,
Do you have a spare PSU that you could try? Definately sounds like a power-related problem rather than anything else.
I would say its likely to be the PSU, motherboard, or CPU that's faulty, in that order. Wouldn't have thought it was anything to do with the memory as you are probably more likely to get a POST error with that if it's not working, rather than the whole thing not working.
I would try removing the GPU and turning it on too, in case it's that - unlikely though.

checked for any standoffs/stray screws shorting the motherboard to the chassis?

Is your cpu fan working? Sounds like it might be overheating, do you have an onbopar speaker attached? If not attach one so you can hear the beep code.

Did you reset the CMOS before the first power on?

Re: PC turns on for 1 second then turns off.

Plugged in the appropriate 8-pin power cable?

It's to the left of CPU in the above picture.

650watts is more than enough. I've got a similar system running off a 520watt Corsair PSU.

I'd suspect CPU fan fail is on so if there is no fan plugged into the CPU fan header or the 120mm fan spins too slowly to register it'll just shut down.

Also, have you installed the cooler correctly? Use the right mounting holes for the backplate? It's quite easy to get the wrong hole due to the LGA775, 1156 and 1366 being so similar it's now a slot.

It shouldn't bee too hard to take the Noctua heatsink off and seeing if the thermal paste is making good contact or not.

Re: PC turns on for 1 second then turns off.

Going to play around with the CPU fans, the motherboard has 3 places I have seen so far that have cpufan labelled, as for the heat sink I think I did install it correctly but I will take the system apart and check it out to see what could have went wrong.

Also I don't have a spare PSU so can't test that, but I would be very surprised if it was the PSU.
The ram voltage can't be the problem I have not touched it and the ram is compatible with an i5.
Also I did not reset the CMOS before first power on, I actually have no idea how.

RAM: From another thread, the cause of the problem was not setting the RAM voltage to 1.65v and letting the BIOS auto-select 1.5v. Again, please check what it says on the RAM modules themselves or what it says on Corsair's website.

CPU Fan Header:There is only 1 CPU fan header. The other 3 headers are system fan headers.

CMOS Jumper:There is a green "jumper" on this and it is next to the battery.

Click HERE for a picture of where the CPU fan header and Clear CMOS Jumper is located. I don't have a premium account with photobucket so it's been scaled back down. :/

Re: PC turns on for 1 second then turns off.

Thanks for the help sleepyhead, Seeing that picture I may have plugged in the CPU fan in one of the system fans. I won't be able to put the PC back together today to test it as I don't have the time today, but I will on Wednesday.

Update: Had Scan look at the parts for me and they have discovered it was due to bent pins on the CPU socket. Was this something I did while fixing the PC? If so how can I avoid it when trying to fix it again?

Thanks for the great feedback so far.

Re: PC turns on for 1 second then turns off.

I'd have thought you'd have noticed if the CPU didn't slot in nice and easily first time.

On the occasions I've seen this is because either

    1. I've tried to update the BIOS through the Windows utility and it's zapped the BIOS firmware on the mobo.

    2. Dodgy ram module.

    3. Both the above - really confusing to track down

Possibly....I mean the CPU may not have been seated in correctly when you pulled the retaining arm thing down and lock it in place. Maybe you bent the pins when packed and shipped back to scan. Maybe you exterted too much pressure when installing the aftermarket CPU cooler. Perhaps the Noctua backplate was mis-installed or another part was mis-installed. It's a complicated bit of kit (I know I have one) for what it is....Don't get why you need so many parts for a replatively simple install.

Anyhow, when installing these parts it's a case of being careful, double/triple check before installing/tightening screws and don't exert too much force when screwing stuff down/in.
