Help with PC gaming config.
Hi,
After experiencing the hell that is dell's warranty my 730 in on ebay and im looking for a gaming pc.
Im looking for the following specs ( open to advice )
Intel i7 950, 3.06GHz
6GB Memory
1792MB XFX GTX 295
1 x 300 GB Western Digital VelociRaptor
2 x 2000 GB Western Digital ( raid 1 - for my itunes collection )
windows 7
LG CH08LS10 - 8x Blu-Ray Reader & DVDRW
Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional
Im looking for this to be built for me.
The problem is im not keen on the cases shown and have seen from the forums that i can change the case. Im thinking of the GT1000-BLACK - Zalman - would this keep things inside cool enough?
Im not sure of build time, but would it be best to order now, you keep the machine until windows7 is released - then ship?
Last question - what warranty do i get with the pc?
Re: Help with PC gaming config.
I would seriously consider looking at the socket 1156 Core i5 and Core i7 TBH unless you need more than one PCI-E 2.0 16x slot.
Also the HD5870 or a pair of HD5850 cards in Crossfire will be worth considering over the GTX295.
An SSD would be better than getting a WD VelociRaptor too.
Re: Help with PC gaming config.
Personally I would look at either the Core i7 920 or the Core i5 750 and (as Cat has already said) a Radeon 5870 or a pair of 5850s.
The performance gain of the Core i7 950 over the Core i7 920 does not justify the cost. The Core i7 920 offers better memory bandwidth than the Core i5/7 8xx series and more PCI-E lanes. The Core i5 750 is cheaper and does not lag the more expensive cpus by much, particularly at gaming. The LGA1156 review on Hexus is a good starting point to compare cpu performance.
The Radeon 58xx series are the most powerful graphics cards on the market and you gain the bonus of DX11 compatibility.
I notice that you are looking to have your PC built for you. Have you given any consideration to building it yourself?
Re: Help with PC gaming config.
Dont forget a Psu to power it all.
I agree with sticking to the i920 it overclocks so well why pay more??
Where are you getting it built??
Re: Help with PC gaming config.
Hi, Thanks for the replies.
Was looking to get it built by Scan.
Im currently working a lot so don't have much time to build it myself.
I did think about an ssd, but would need something with about 150Gb space - i have a lot of games.
An ssd this size costs a lot.
I did try ATI some years ago and vowed never to use them again as had so many driver issues.
Im going with the Nvidia as its tried and tested - no hassle.
Any views on the case?

My 8800GTS 512MB went kaput on me and my 6800LE had capacitor issues and yet every ATI card I have still works - it does not mean that I will never buy another Nvidia card does it??
I don't know where people get these "issues" especially for single card setups. I have had BOTH Nvidia and ATI graphics cards in my computers and rarely had any issues with either of them TBH.
30% of Vista BSODs in 2007 were caused by Nvidia drivers BTW:
