    Best Budget Hard Drive

Im looking for a new hard drive for my old pc, looking to spend under 40 quid,

    Performance and reliability are key
I dont mind too much about noise
Anything above 500gb is a bonus but not necessary

Samsung gets mentioned around here quite a bit and the SpinPoint F3 500gb looks good at around £35. Let me know if there are any better alternatives

    Thanks

    Re: Best Budget Hard Drive

Maxtor (now a division of Seagate) don't have a particularly good reputation, although that may be now be undeserved. Maxtor as a brand seems to be used more for caddy solutions containing Seagate drives.

Personally I'd go for the Samsung or the WD - depending on budget. Both good drives, Samsungs have had a reputation for quietness, but I'm not sure there is much to choose between them. Hitachi has also been mentioned - another brand with a good name.

look at the drives that are within your budget and see if there are any specific features that one has over another, and if they are useful to you and worth any price differential.

That Samsung drive you mentioned is the one I'd get (the F3).

    Re: Best Budget Hard Drive

Yeah it wouldn't surprise me it's one of only 2 (so far) 500GB per platter 1TB 7200rpm drives and it's the newer of the two.
