I currently have an AMS system with a Phenom II X2 Dual Core 545 CPU.
Now, would i see a difference going over to a triple core or a quad core? If so, which one? Not into Overclocking just want a good CPU that i can use to multitask etc.

Doesn't support that.
Well for day to day - no
for specialist (vid encoding, gaming, file conversion) - yes

From experience going from a dual core to a quad core was definitely better for multi-tasking and video encoding. However most games still run fine on a dual core although this will probably change in the next year or two.
I would probably look at a X4 945 or X4 955BE. The X4 945 comes in a 95w version unlike the X4 955BE which is a 125w CPU. I would make sure that your motherboard can support 125w processors before upgrading though.
If you already have a decent heatsink then this Ebay seller has an OEM X4 945 for a very attractive price:

Can you recommend a decent quiet after market CPU cooler for that processor please?
Also how does it compare speed performance wise to a 955BE? I know one is 3.0GHz and the other 3.2GHz but was more interested if the lower power consumption of the 945 affected performance in a big way?
Thanks.

At £140 surely a retail one would be better with warranty? Theres a no returns policy and full disclaimer at the bottom of the article.
Paypal may give your money back but will take 3-4 weeks.
'qualified PC technichian' - hmmm
Exactly. I would rather pay a bit more as i don't like the last line that guy wrote about 'Qualified Technician'!!
A second vote for the retail CPU! You pay a bit more and you get a warranty AND a cooler -and AMD's stock cooler isn't too bad unless you want to do serious overclocking.

So, stock AMD cooler would be good enough unless I'm overclocking in which case a True Black would be the better option? Are the AMD stock coolers fairly quiet?
Thanks.
