OC Question

Hi

I have an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (It was a low budget purchase, lights and a fancy case seemed more important at the time :-\)

I currently have it OCed to a 2200+ (1.80Ghz) and was wondering if I could go any further? Can anyone recomend settings for the best speeds out of this? Its really dragging the rest of my system down

IU heard somewhere that their XXXX+ rating is usualy the top (So 1800+ at 1.80 is the best im likly to get) but it would be nice to push it that little further if it can handle it.

Cooling isn't a problem, I have 4 case fans, 2 at front blowing over the system, one in the roof blowing air out, and one at the back, bringing air in and an exhast blowing air out (mainly from my gfx card) and i have Artic Silver V conductive paste coupled with a Coolermaster Areo 7+.

if you could give us your pc specs we would be able to help you out a bit better
and the code off your 1800xp cpu would help as well as this would let us know whether it was a good clocker or not as some 1800's o/c very well

Basically you will just have to try it and see =)

what mem speeds have you got? (2100, 3200 etc) as slower memory will make overclocking harder
Whats your mobos max FSB? it really needs to get to 400 for a nice overclock =)
is the CPU locked? (can you change its multiplier)
and how have you overclocked it so far? eg by FSB or mulitplier etc

How do I get that?

And I've OCed it so far by chaning the Multiplier.

It's on a label on the organic substrate of the CPU. Just take off your heatsink and type out the whole code.

Take off the heatsync...aww...its a coolermaster Areo 7+, I dunno if its just me but i find them really hard to fit.

Anyway, i can't at the moment co sim in the middle of an assignment, onee i finish this I'll do it then and post back later.

do you know if your mobo has the agp/pci hus locked? if it is
try putting your fsb to 200 and your multiplier to 9 or 10 and
see if it boots. i would have thought your ram would get near
pc3200 speeds
or try raising your fsb a couple of mhz each time untill your pc
wont post then drop it back a few mhz

If it won't POST how do I get bac into the settings to lower it again? Doesn't POST come before any boot?

switch the pc off then back on and go back in to the bios or if the pc wont post just reset the bios with the jumper or take out your pc battery for a few seconds and put it back in

The kd-7 uses a via kt-400 chipset so 200mhz fsb is a no-no,about 185mhz fsb will be pushing agp pci speeds to the max.

Falcon2004 - To find the max overclock of the cpu use a high multi and low fsb and go from there raising a few mhz at a time.

If it is any help as a benchmark, i have a 1800+ at 2ghz without any problems, and could prolly go a fair bit further. However this is at 200fsb with multiplier at 10, and as schrickvr6 said you will be pushing at 185 aparently, so you might need some tweaking, but you should be able to hit that 2g without soo many worries i woulda thought, the chip is certainly capable.

that all depends what core revision his cpu is.

You can get an idea what it is without taking the hs/f off..

What is the default cpu voltage?

if its 1.775v its a palomino which means your about on the limit already

if its 1.6v thats good as it would be a dut3c thoroughbred B core which should be good for 2.2ghz +

if it's 1.5v thats either very good or not so good,this means its either a dlt3c thoroughbred A core or a dlt3c thoroughbred B core,the A core would be good for around 2ghz,the dlt3c B core is the pick of the bunch and should do 2.2ghz pretty easily,many do much better although the xp1700's seemed to be the best overclockers.

Hmm...I tired the 200fsb before reading schrickvr6s post. He was apparantly right...as my computer wouldn't even come on until I poppwed the battery out and then back in.

What is the default cpu voltage?

How would I find that out exactly?

[Edit: I jsut noticed that someone said the 1700+ was the best for OCing, I have one of those lying around from a dead machine, would I get better results with that?]

[Edit2: Sorry for going on about this, I know i'm an OC n00b, but I'm willing to learn. If 'yall getting bored of telling me what to do I will quite happily read up on it myself. ]

download cpuz or have a look in the hardware monitor in bios.

If you can tell us the code off your other chip then we can get an idea of how good a clocker it is

Ok, Voltage is flickering between 1.55 and 1.60.
