Intel Core 2 Quad - CPU COOLER RECOMMENDATIONS

I'm currently using the stock cooler for the Intel Q8400, I find it way to noisy.

I am looking for a very quiet CPU cooler which also may be used for a little bit of overclocking. My case isn't that big, so size is also factor to take into consideration.

    CASE: Coolermaster Sileo 500 - (D)480 x (W)200 x (H)432mm
    MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte EP45-DS3L

    Cheers,

Rule of thumb a case that has a rear 120mm fan any cooler will fit.

Would a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro fit?

They seem to be very quiet and have great reviews.

Yeah that should be fine . Although for any serious overclocking it might not be ideal.

Thermaltake TRUE. The Aluminium version is fine, the copper version will be even better though.
Running a overclocked Q9550 to 3.6 and computer noise is lower than ambient.

Cooler Master Hyper TX3 is another decent cooler with a low £ and great cooling
    About £15.
    Hyper TX3
Has a nice small footprint but is HDT , Heat Pipe Direct touch so really shifts the heat.

Re: Intel Core 2 Quad - CPU COOLER RECOMMENDATIONS

I have a Freezer 7 Pro on my moderately overlclocked Core 2 Duo.

Previously had a Thermaltake "BigTyp" on it which despite having good reviews ran horribly (I think this is due to it being a traditional HSF with the fan blowing down, and to there not being much clearance for it in P180 which is more designed for Front->Back ventillation)

I think the Freezer 7 Pro is a great cooler personally, AC have been doing it right in the low price bracket for ages, and I think theres a new revision out as well.

There is also the Akasa AK-876 which is a very similar design to the AC Freezer 7 Pro, but a few pounds cheaper (£14 vs £18)?

The Titan Fenrir is also very well reviewed and has been dropping in price recently, I beleive it has reached around the £25 mark.

For me the Tuniq Tower 120 was unbeatable. Clocked my old E6600 to 3.6 and kept it plenty cool.

Re: Intel Core 2 Quad - CPU COOLER RECOMMENDATIONS

Please no, not for quiet on a quad core

Remember intel did the same with the quad core as they did with the pentium D, ie they got 2 cpu's, stuck them onto the same substrate and stuck a heatspreader over the top.

That's not a bad thing in it's self but it does mean it's far hotter than a core2duo, because it's 2 core2duo's under that heatspreader.

The ACf7p is fine for a core2duo esp if you want it running quiet, but with the extra heat of a core2quad it'll have to step the fan speed up and then it's not quiet.

On top of that is the Akasa AK-965x3 which is just as good as the ACf7p but cheaper, only problem is it's now discontinued and hard to find as remaining stocks have sold out in alot of places.

The newer Akasa Nero AK-967 replaced it, with a 120mm fan it's far less noisey than a 92mm fan based cooler, has larger fin surface area and mass (so better effecence and larger heat capasity)
    It's a bit more money at £24, but it's a good cooler.
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Akasa...-120mm-PWM-fan

Not sure how good this is (waiting for mine to turn up) CoolerMaster Hyper 212Plus £18
    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/117187...k/Product.html
Given that it's a 120mm fan based cooler and only a couple of quid more than the ACf7p it looks like a far better option for a cheap cooler

Re: Intel Core 2 Quad - CPU COOLER RECOMMENDATIONS

Scythe Kama Angle is what I use... it's huge... but can leverage the airflow in the PSU and rear case fan so that most of the time it doesn't need the fan actually on it to be running at all, nevermind noisily...

Keeps my Q6600 @ 3.0GHz < 60 C when gaming, and to be honest due to the tight fit in my Antec Solo case I'm not even sure I attached it securely (I couldn't attach it first then put the motherboard in due to a cross bar under the PSU).

Def a decent enough cooler though and if you have a case with exhaust fan at rear and in the top then probably could run passive.
