    1156 motherboard+RAM

Sorry for all the new thread lately
Anyway, what motherboard/RAM would you recommend for a Core i5 CPU? I already have other components, I'm just upgrading CPU/mobo/RAM. I'm not planning to overclock and even if I do it would only be minor. I have an Antec 900 so anything up to ATX will fit.
    Thanks again!!

    Re: 1156 motherboard+RAM

along with the gd65 and gd80 i've already mentioned i've heard good things about the asus p7p55d, i saw an article earlier comparing it to the gd65 i think and it seemed to get a pretty good write up. that same article mentioned that some of the asus boards have a similar option to the msi oc genie also. as a side note the stock i5 cooler is a little noisey when up to full speed if your going for a quieter build

Thanks. Sorry I wasn't ignoring what you said before I just want a few opinions before I go and buy something. I would probably use the stock cooler to start with the upgrade to a quieter cooler at a later date. Would I not be better off with a slightly cheaper board like this since I'm unlikely to OC? http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Gigab...SATAIIRAID-ATX although what does it mean by 'No multi-threaded turbo' on this review? http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-...-632729/review

    Re: 1156 motherboard+RAM

nah its fine, i've just done a fair bit of reading around some of these boards lately and seen a few bits. erm not too sure on the multi-threaded turbo though i would assume that you cant have hyperthreading if turbo mode is on. there's plenty of reviews out for most of the available boards now (a lot of user comments seem to be based around the msi boards, probably due to their intro prices). with the choice out there i'd say it will most likely come down to either price or brand preference as personally i wouldn't have gone down the i5 route if i couldn't get one of the promo msi boards

+1 for the MSI GD65, cracking board and simple to overclock even if you don't use the MSI Genie button. Got my 750 to 4ghz easily.

    Re: 1156 motherboard+RAM

My guess is "No multi-threaded turbo" means it doesn't use the new intel turbo mode, the new intel turbo mode is on both the i5 1156 and i7 1156 & 1366 cpu's
Basically what it does is turn off cores which are not being used and bump up the multiplier of the used cores by 1 for each core not being used.
It also increases the core speed by one any way.
    so i5 750 base multiplier = x20
turbo mode on + all 4 cores in use = x21
turbo mode on + 1 core in use = x24

It's best to turn it off when overclocking as the bump in multiplier can cuase instability.
All the motherboards with automatic overclocking features turn turbomode off when you turn the auto overclock on.
