AM3 CPU coolers for X3 720

Need a quiet CPU cooler for my X3 720.

I am concerned that alot of modern coolers for the AM2/AM3 socket push the air from bottom to top. Meaning the fan pulls air from the back of the video card and up to the top of the case. Where alot of the holder designs push from front to back and out the fan fan of the case.

I am currently looking between the cooler master TX3 or the Akasa AK 876.

I don't want to spend too much as I plan to water cool the rig in a Lancool K62 soon. But on that note the lancool case has top mounted fans, so maybe a modern design pushing the heat up would be better.

Any thoughts from people.

Depends how much you want to spend, if you use scan and buy a True Black for £36, add a fan at £40 nothing can touch it!

Are you sure? I can only see ones that go from front to back, and most have brackets you can turn by 90 degrees anyway.

I always recommend the artic cooling 64 pro.

Depends how much you want to spend, if you use scan and buy a True Black for £36, add a fan at £40 nothing can touch it!

I don't really want to spend much more than £25 - otherwise its too much of a waste if I water cool again.

All the good xigmatech's in my price range all have am2/3 designs for the fan to be pushing from bottom to top. Also the new arctic cooler 7 rev2 does the same.

If I was getting a new one I think I would go for this; it should do front to back but maybe a bit out of your budget.

That looks pretty cool, not sure its worth £10 over the TX3 or Akasa cooler.

Seconded. I'm using one with a 720 and it runs idle at about 500RPM and very quiet with the CPU at 25 degrees. On load it's only about 900RPM tops and still very quiet and the CPU doesn't get above 35 degrees (even if I overclock to 3.2GHz).

This is bottom to top or top to bottom air flow.... Had one already from scan and sent it back.

WHat do you guys mean by top to bottom?
Im using a xigmatek s963 and it is horizontal (so pulls air from top front of case and pumps out the rear).

Because of the mounting clip position on the Xigmatek s963 and the clip position on the AM2/3 boards this heatsink can only be placed in one position. This means the fan is blowing air from the bottom direction of the case and not from the front.

Ah that makes alot more sense! Never used an am2/3 board personally so havent had that issue
