    PWM CPU cooler fan problem

I would like some help from someone in the know.

I just got a second hand cooler; it has a PWM fan. When plugged into my 4-pin CPU_Fan on my motherboard gives a "twitch" when I turn my computer on and then stops.

The fan works normally when I plug it into another 3 pin controller for case fans on the motherboard.

    Is this normal?

Its a Xigmatek 120mm fan and a AM2+/AM3 motherboard (make on left).

Re: PWM CPU cooler fan problem

Maybe your cpu is just not running hot enough to turn the fan on? What temps are you actually getting from your cpu?

I have a 545 with just a ac64pro on and it runs very cool and slow fan speed so with a bigger cooler you might get away with "passive" cooling till you load it up.

Re: PWM CPU cooler fan problem

I thought that but at start up on the stock cooler the fan starts; I assume that the temps at t=0 are the same. Will give it a go non the less.

Stock cooler is pants though compared to something like the Xigmatec coolers, i assume you are using a Xigmatec cooler as you mentioned a Xigmatec fan?

Re: PWM CPU cooler fan problem

In the bios is a setting that lets the pc control the fan if you set this to off then the fan should be on perminant.
I have done this befor with a Xigmatec before as the fan was also keeping the NB chip cooler ( and at 1,500 rmp it was still quiet )

Another way to test is to use prime wait for the temp to rise and watch the fan speed up
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Re: PWM CPU cooler fan problem

You could do as suggested by s3ds and turn the auto fan control off, assuming its quiet enough for you. The other thing you maybe able to set up is the minimum fan speed, instead of off set it to 25% or whatever or set the minimum allowable temperature so low the fan wont switch off.

There are several ways around it if you don't want the fan to stop, but it sounds to me like its just running cool enough to not warrent the fan being used.

Run prime95 or something to load the cpu up and see if it starts running, i wager it will.

Dilemma over; needed to set bios to PWM! Silly me it works fine now.
