    Smile Gaming build £400-450. Do-able ?

whats in the title basically. Its for my friend and ive suggested some items to him but there are other areas where im not too sure. The build is for the base unit - he has KB/mouse, monitor but does need a DVD drive.

Im sort of thinking along the lines of a 5770 for his grafix card and marrying it up with an Athlon X4 or Phenom X3. On the other hand should he wait until the i3's get here and get himself a dual core w/HT and see how that pans out. 4GB of DDR3 is most probably going to be another road to go down as its just not economical to go for DDR2 motherboards at current prices.

    Suggestions ???

I would have said maybe a 4870 or gtx 260 instead of the 5770, as (at the moment) they can be had cheaper than the 5770 and seem to perform better, subject to future driver changes. Unless of course dx11 is a deciding factor...?

Agreed - 5770 is a premium right now, they'll come down a lot later.

That’s funny; I would have said the opposite.

The 4870 has a notoriously high power consumption and high temps, which would put me right off.

The 5770 performance in relation to the 4870 and GTX 260 is almost on par, and in some games with certain resolutions and effects it can outperform them. Let’s not forget it consumes far less power, produces far less heat, is smaller and is also DX11 compliant.

Power hungry cards means you’ll need a slightly more expensive PSU with a higher rated wattage, so overall thats a saving.

£111 is a premium? I dont think so.

The 4770s sell for the same price as a better performing 4850, and for good reason, they consume less power and produce less heat, these are things to consider.

    Re: Gaming build £400-450. Do-able ?

I was under the impression that the 4870 & 260 need 2 power connetcors in compariosn to the 5770's single, this way he wouldn't need to buy a higher PSU so to speak but still a reputable one ofcourse. Also I don't think hes the type who's after second hand parts, all though your suggestions have been appreciated

I do think so - they've got a huge margin to be able to reduce costs in response to future competition from nVidia. It's only the dx11 monopoly and new adaptor premium that's keeping it high at the moment. They could probably sell them for £70-80 and still make a decent margin.

But it's still a good chip for the price, just the price is higher than usual at the moment.

£111? I can only find the 5750 for £111, the 5770 seems to be around the £125 mark wherever I've looked....

On the heat and power consumption though, fair enough if those are considerations, and also on the second power connector. I suppose it really depends how much cheaper you can get a decent power supply with 1 PCI-E connector instead of 2?

    Re: Gaming build £400-450. Do-able ?

I would probably look at something along these lines:

    AMD Phenom II X3 720 ~ £90

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159071

    4gb DDR3 RAM ~ £61

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166995

    MSI 770-C45 ~ £49

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/165438

    HD4870 512mb ~ £93

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169206

    Samsung F3 1TB ~ £57

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173804

Corsair 450W HX Series Modular PSU ~ £52

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152606

    DVD rewriter~ £16

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164449

    Case ~ £25

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/172779

The Total comes to around £443 including the free Supersaver postage option and excluding the cost of an OS.

The motherboard is quite decent for the price and has all solid capacitors too:

BTW,the cheaper HD5750 and HD5770 cards have sold out on Ebuyer.

Cheers for the build, he probably wont be buying until next week so il keep an eye out for today only offers and the like. Do you think its worth spending teh extra and going for a 550VX rather than the 450HX? Likewise and spending the extra and going for a 1GB 4870 ?

TBH, an HX450W should be enough to power an HD4890 or HD5850 IMHO although if you want to play it safe then get the VX550W.

BTW,the cost of the HD4870 1gb and a VX550W or an HD5770 1gb and a HX450W will be around the same from the prices on Ebuyer.

    Working

    Yep is doable for less

I'd go along with CAT's sugestion (he must have that in a file ready for copy&pasteing)

    With a few changes

    AMD Phenom II X2 545 3GHz

    or
    AMD Athlon X2 245 2.9GHZ

I still don't see any real need for more than 2 cores yet, the extra saved can be put on a cooler.

For graphics card, depends on what he want to play and at what resolution.
a 4850 or gts250 for under £80 would be more than enough for anything under a 22" and will happy cope with most 22" resolutions (16:10 not the higher res 16:9)
    Sapphire HD 4850 512MB £78

    or
    Zotac GTS250 512MB £78

The case is unknown, It's not in yet so we've got no idea if it's any good.
If he's not the one building it and never really going to dig around inside it then an El-cheapo case is fine.

For a good cheap case I'd look at one of the Sunbeam cases
    http://www.ebuyer.com/search?page=1&...at=418&mfr=325
    or the Coolermaster Elite 334

However consider how little is going in to this I also think about mATX
    Same basic build but
    mATX motherboard

Case Antec NSK-4000 II £39 (bit more money but very nice case)
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/170132
Or a Coolermaster Elite 340 or 341 (if you can find one, should be around £30 or less)
Scan have htem listed but awaiting eta and price

The 4870 does run hot but I think it's designed for it tbh. Doesn't worry me, but I only OC it with the catalyst control suite.
Also a second PCIE connector can be had through a cheap adaptor like so: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Akasa...tor-(AK-CB4-6)
I'm using a corsair 450vx myself with that adaptor.
