Can I Use 2x1Gb DDR3 Sticks In Dual Channel From a Triple Channel 3x1Gb Kit?
Hi folks,
As per title really, have had some OCZ Reaper 3x1Gb PC3-15000 for some time now, brought in anticipation of moving to Core i7, however decided I didn't need to and have the kit lying around, so my question is could I use 2 of the sticks in dual channel mode from this 3 stick kit?
If not, I'll put it up for sale, any idea on what I'm looking at for them posted?
Thank you all!

Yes as long as you have DDR3 slots.

Yes you can. RAM is "dumb", it has no understanding of dual and triple channel. It is entirely a motherboard related technology.
Why not use all 3 though?

I knew it, I wasn't sure so I asked.
In regards to why not use all 3, well, would the RAM still operate in dual channel mode with the P45 motherboard having 3 DIMMS occupied as opposed to 4? Presumed it wouldn't.
Like I say, I didn't upgrade to x58, have stuck with my G31/x38/P35/P45 boards and E4500/E6750/E8400 CPUs. Have to say though, the new Clarkdale Core i3? (one with integrated GPU?) is probably the one I'm looking at for an HTPC upgrade.
Thanks again for your prompt replies.

It should still operate in a semi-working mode. Either way, the performance difference will be much better having the extra RAM over "losing" the ability of dual and triple in most real world situations. Certainly when dealing with a low amount like 2Gb :)

That's definitely good to know, thank you again.
