Silent Cooler for Phenom II x3 720BE

    Hi all

I want to replace the stock cooler for a silent one. I don't overclock and can't unlock the 4th core so shouldn't need anything extreem to cool it.
My budget is about £15 and quietness is a priority.

Also want a super quiet 80mm case fan that can be controlled by my mobo.

    Any comments or suggestions appreciated

    Thanks in advance

I use the cooler below with my 720BE. It keeps it at approx 20 degrees idle and about 36 at load. Even if I overclock to 3.2 it doesn't get above 40 at load. The fan is quiet, spinning at about 450RPM at idle and is about 1000RPM at load.

It's £18 at the mo but usually appears on the today only for £15.

Thanks Barry, though I'm a little confused cos the specs say 900 to 2500rpm
But if it's silent then that's not an issue.

    Any other suggestions anyone?

    Cheers

If you want silent all the time, get a True black, and fit a low RPM 120mm fan to it.

Looks great thanks but not paying £37 for a cooler. My budget is around £15

I don't mind if it's the as noisy as the stock one under heavy load but at idle it must be silent or near silent

Strange - Speedfan is reporting 459RPM at idle though - the MB BIOS the same. It is very quiet though and on bang for buck I can't fault it - keeps everything very cool.

Got one of those on my x4 640 and it seems to keep it very cool, even at 3.7ghz i never see temps above mid 40's on load, not sure how the phenom would cope though.

Also it has to be mounted vertically, either blowing air towards the roov of the case or onto the gfx card, not sure if this would be an issue for you, it didn't seem to affect my temps any.

I've just had a thought. Isn't it better to have the airflow towards the mobo so it cools the mobo chips and ram?
If the fan is on the top so the warm air flows towards the bottom of the case isn't that all the wrong way round. I always thought it was best to have cool air in from the front @ bottom and out @ the top rear.

Excuse my ignorance if I've got it all wrong

It's usually best that way yes. I have my Freezer Pro blow air from the front, through the heatsink fins and towards the exhaust fan - which is the recommended way to do it and the way it came configured. It can be configured for all sorts of scenarios though.
