Dual Booting, Windows 7 and XP

Several of the programs i use at university don't work on Windows 7 64bit, so i want to try and dual boot with Windows XP. Iv found my old WinXp CD etc and iv managed to split the HDD into two partitions however im a bit unsure as to where to go from here.

Is it just a matter of putting the XP DVD in, restarting and booting from it, then just selecting the second partition and installing it there? Iv tried this a few times but each time when it says ''select any key to boot from CD..'' it freezes up.

Is there anything else i should be doing, or is it just a problem with my XP/DVD etc?

    thanks guys

Re: Dual Booting, Windows 7 and XP

slightly off topic, but have you considered using the virtual machine and xp mode inside 7?
I see you too are student so I'm guessing you've got hold of your free copy of 7 professional, which gives you access to a free xp virtual machine image.
if your interested have a look here...

I've got it running on my machine (its a very handy tool!) and from the looks of you system yours should have all the necessary technologies to support it too

I haven't done it with Win7 in particular but that is what I have done in the past and have never had a problem.

I'm still on Windows XP but moving to Win 7 soon, have the software already. Hoping that my apps will work fine on Win7 but if not I will be looking to dual boot because I just have the Home Premium addition so no built in XP support.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

Re: Dual Booting, Windows 7 and XP

Andehh, this guide should be just what you need. I've followed their guides before and they are completely painless. I know I've linked the Vista + XP guide but the process will be near identical for Win7 + XP.

The related how-tos links contain most other combinations you might need in the future.

Edit: as to the locking up at boot, I think the DVD drive has to be the master device to boot from it? I'm not 100% sure on that one though!
