    Cheap memory for i5

Before anyone says G.skill Ripjaws I know.

What I'm thinking here is even cheaper, only say 2x1gb sticks and £40 or less, the lower the cost and higher the specs the better.
This is less for heavy use more for, getting it up and running and overclocking tests.

Must admit I'm a bit confused by the memory with i5 that's one thing that socket 775 had going for it, memory was so much easier.

I almost fell for some miss numbering from play
    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/2162/14...archtype=genre
ok over £40 but £67 for 4gb of 1600MHz looked great, luckly I checked and saw a post by Yellowbeard confirming that it's 1.8v

But that does lead me on to a side question, anyone happly running memory under clocked just to get it working in the 1.5-1.65 voltage range?
If so how well does it work?

Also what's the effects on performance from running different memory multipliers and speeds?

    Re: Cheap memory for i5

Ok after reading this bit-tech i5 overclocking artical I'm more confused
    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpu...-core-i5-750/1

They were using that dominator 1600mhz memory at 1.65v, only going higher when they just trying for high clocks.
they talk about lowering the memory multiplier to compensate for the higher base clock, which I sort of get, the final speed is a multiplier of the base clock.
However what effect on perfromance does lowering the memory multiplier have?
I'd assume it impacts perfromance, but but how much? does the higher cpu clock make up for it?

    Re: Cheap memory for i5

I tried to give a good at explaining everything here, and keeping it simples...

... about your point about overclocking. The memory multiplier is like the CPU multi. It determines how fast the RAM is clocked. For example I have 180 MHz BCLK with 8x multi, results in my RAM clocking in at 1440Mhz.

    Re: Cheap memory for i5

So that that mean if you run the base clock faster and knock the memory multiplier down then as long as the base clock is raised enough to keep the end resault memory speed the same then there's no difference in performance?

    Re: Cheap memory for i5

Ahh I think I've found a missing link that was ading to my confusion.
I've got a Msi p55-gd65 and I know the memory multiplier options are
    - Auto
    - 3
    - 4
    - 5
    - 6

With a default base clock of 133 I couldn't figure out how the numbers were relateing, then I realised I'm missing a x2 multiplier
    so it's ether (BCLK * Mem ratio) * 2 or (BCLK * 2) * mem ratio
So an i5 and pc3-10666 default settings are
    133 * 20 = 2.66ghz cpu
    (133 * 2) * 5 = 1333mhz memory

Overclock the base clock to 166mhz drop the memory ratio by one
    166 * 20 = 3.33ghz cpu
    (166 * 2) * 4 = 1333mhz memory

The overall memory speed should be uneffected but the cpu will be running faster.
(1000 / memory speed ) * cas = time for memory operation, aka performance
which would mean that 1600mhz cas9 memory (5.6ns) is slightly faster than 1333mhz cas 8 (6ns) but slightly slower than 1333mhz cas7 (5.3ns)

    Am I correct there?

That would also mean a theoritical max BCLK of 222 on this motherboard without over clocking 1333 memory.
    (222 * 2) * 3 = 1332mhz
    222 * 20 = 4.44ghz cpu theoritical max (ok I doubt I'd be able to hit that)

    Re: Cheap memory for i5

Oh I'm actually seriously tempted to buy something from OcUK

    OCZ Value 2GB (2x1GB) DDR3 PC3-10666 Cas9 1333MHz for £27
Yes it's not fast or that good but as I've just calculated that an i5 750 is going to cap out before the memory that's not a great issue.
but £27 vs £70-80 for 4gb of g.skill is looking very tempting.

Anyone know of some cheaper ddr3 about?

Save me from breaking a promise and doing something I know I'll regret

Oh wow that is cheap. I too have a no OcUK policy... but wow. I'm going on the hunt for something equally priced from a different store!

    ( Temp Out of stock)

Not cheaper I know, but, at least its not OCUK, and you get a heatspreader? (Wow Play.com links fail)

    There is also http://www.oyyy.co.uk/product.php/93...LAID=346607836
But I think thats a case of "Out of stock, so we put the price down to get first on comparison sites)

    Re: Cheap memory for i5

need to be low voltage for i5, ideal 1.65v max

    cloest I've got so far is Kingston KHX1600C9D3K2/2G HyperX / 2GB / 1600MHz cas9 £37
    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/2162/14...archtype=genre

but at that price I might as well shellout twice as much and get 4gb of higher spec g.skill
Why don't g.skill make thoes ripjaws in 2x1gb kits

    Re: Cheap memory for i5

Ah knew there would be a hitch as to why the OcUK was the only option, I'll stay on the lookout though

    Re: Cheap memory for i5

I keep looking at that kit, and I am wondering why it is so (comparatively) cheap.

But I can't see any reason, other than its not very pretty.

    Hmmmmmm

*Fights urge to order all the remaining components now*

    Re: Cheap memory for i5

that does seem a bit too cheap, must be something wrong at that price. I did have a no OcUK policy too, but I did get the g.skill for my brothers build from the store as it saved me around a tenner at the time. you could always buy some heatspreaders too improve the asthetics
