Question Best BD Reader & DVD-RW combi drive?

    Hi.

What is currently the best BD reader and DVD-RW combi drive?

Considering a LG CH08LS10.AUAR which is on today only at Scan for £80.49:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=30302

Did consider a BD writer but just can't see the need for it right now. Happy for the media and drives to continue to fall in price in the meantime.

    Thanks.

    Cheekster.

I think the ebuyer linked one is OEM, and the one linked at Scan is retail. That will be why it costs more at Scan.

Also you can get free shipping from Scan if you are eligible.

Ebuyer is free anyway if you take the budget option.

Re: Best BD Reader & DVD-RW combi drive?

But more importantly is the model I've mentioned what any of you would recommend? Or I should I be looking at purchasing a different/better make/model?

The retail version was £80.49 under Today Only section at Scan today which changed some time around 2pm.

    Thanks.

Re: Best BD Reader & DVD-RW combi drive?

I think its discontinued / End of life now, but I have a

    http://www.lge.com/uk/it-products/dv...rs-GGCH20L.jsp

sitting in my PC (at least i think thats the right one)

It burns DVDs, Reads HD-DVDs and Blu-rays. (you can pick up some great deals on HD-DVDs and use them with nice combo drive )

Cost me around £65 retail when I bought it, including PowerDVD HD edition.

Re: Best BD Reader & DVD-RW combi drive?

seems to have been a massive jump in the price of these, could swear they were only around £60 a few months ago. The retail box on ebuyer seems to be a decent price and has some good reviews. Definately seems to be a lot less choice now than a few months ago too

Re: Best BD Reader & DVD-RW combi drive?

I believe the ones previously available around the £60 mark were BD and HD-DVD readers only i.e. they could not write CD & DVD.

Not sure about that, My one, as mentioned above can burn CD/DVD and was about £60,

There has just been a price rise. Maybe since the end of the format war - more people commiting to a high def drive? Although mine is a combo so doenst explain it really either. I cant understand it, in fact I only started seeing the ones that cant burn anything recently.

    Tis very strange.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LG-GGC-H20L-Bl...item4ceb8f6e2d

This again is the same one as mine, and I recommend this drive thoroughly. Already bid up to more than I paid though :S (although thats not uncommon with components)

+1 on the LG HD/BD reader

It has been good for me. I got for £67 from scan over a year ago, so cheap too!

I think I got it for about the price, less even perhaps.

The only problem I had with it was that it's old skool length.. seriously it's a beast. Having said that it is easily the best drive i've ever bought because it is so quiet when play dvd's and blu rays, it's perfect

Re: Best BD Reader & DVD-RW combi drive?

Oh one quick caveat with the drive I recommended. The LED is blindingly bright in a darkened room, maybe thats a problem with all PC disk drives - but Ive never tried to properly hook one up for a cinema experience before I got this one.

Had to cover the LED I found it so distracting (as the PC was in the same area as the TV)

+1 on the LG combo drive. I use it solely for BD playback as I don't burn anything on my HTPC and have a standalone HD-DVD drive, but it's rock solid on that front. I can't imagine you would have an issue burning with it.

Question Re: Best BD Reader & DVD-RW combi drive?

So to summarise, try to find a LG GGC-H20L (if HD-DVD playback is required), otherwise a LG CH08LS10.AUAR will be my best option?
