Raid 0 hdds.... which ones to get?

well!!!
i need some hard drive space...
i have only 40gig
now this is running off the IDE ribbon on my mobo so i have the ability to use 2 hard drives in raid 0on the sata thingy...
now, i want a failry large capacity.... so probably 2 160 gigs or 2 120 gigs....
what do you guys recomend?

what are you storing? will it be backed up?

unless you need the speed, forget about raid0 - its just too dangerous IMO.

I'd agree; I use RAID0 on my workstation at work, but that's cause all the data is stored on my servers.

itll just be holding games and trash like that.....
so for the frame rates i wont realy bother about the risk... isnt that half the fun of SPEED???

and anything i lose i could easily get back at a LANs or friends.... (i have friends YAY!)

OK, I'm going to go against the grain on this one. I love Maxtor drives. I've had Samsungs, IBMs, Seagates and WDs all fail on me at one time or another. The one manufacturer with whom I've never had any grief has been Maxtor. No, they're not the absolute fastest (but they're pretty quick). No, they're not THE absolute quietest (but they're good enough for me). Nick says: http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=115560&cks=PRL . £67.53 each. Only 120GB but have a 3 year warranty on them. For some reason they only warranty the larger capacity drives for a year, otherwise I'd have recommended the 160 or 200GB flavours. The equivalent Samsungs are also warrantied for 3 years however, as are their 160GB so that might serve you better.

frame rates?

HDD speed isn't going to have any impact on those, unless you have way too little ram, but even then RAID0 isn't going to save you - if the HDD has to access too often in games then you don't have nuff ram.

But I'd go for 2 * spinpoints 160GB

If you want to use RAID 0 go ahead as long as you've got a sensible back up system, or are prepared to lose stuff

Quite frankly if you're got your data on a single drive you're at risk as well (RAID 0 reduces the MTBF to about 75% that of a single drive).

I personally very attached to my RAID 0'd seagate barracudas - but thats just 'cause they're so quiet I worry that the power cables have fallen out...

Ive got 2*120 on raid 0 and one 80gb backup. love maxtors because of the warranty. Totally agree
