Gigabyte's website seems to suggest this too - or are we supposed to assume it will....

I have this motherboard, yes it supports smaller, its advertising that it does quad cores, because thats marketing hype. that is a CRACKING board by the way As long as the cpu is AM3 though btw.

Re: Gigabyte 790X motherboard - am I missing something?

Oh naturally, I'm looking at the 550 (dual core) BE because of *ahem* budget cuts. And I will be making full use of the facilities (for facilities see Advanced Core Callibration )
How many fan headers does it have though? Not a massive issue: will probably get fan controller anyway.
    Cheers!

Re: Gigabyte 790X motherboard - am I missing something?

I got a 550 when the 720 was about £100; if it had been in the £90 bracket is in now I would have taken it instead. The extra guaranteed core for £15 is a good deal imo.

You can download the instruction manual for your mobo before you buy. Everything should be in there.

Re: Gigabyte 790X motherboard - am I missing something?

I seem to remember what they mention this they actually mean it can support the higher wattage demands of a tri core or quad core.
So not only would it support the dual core adm cpu's but the extra wattage involved in possibly unlocking the extra cores

It has 3 fan headers, IIRC, possibly 4. That mobo is good for unlocking extra cores

Re: Gigabyte 790X motherboard - am I missing something?

it's also possible that they don't consider 2 cores to be "multi" core. After all, multi means many, and 2 is *not* many

(disclaimer: this may be the 3 large glasses of good red wine talkin )

Re: Gigabyte 790X motherboard - am I missing something?

Remember with any unlocking, just the same as overclocking the resaults are not garrantied.

AMD are probably "binning" cpu's, they estimate how many will have 1 failed core and based their production numbers on that, if they've had fewer failiers than they thought then some without failed cores will get shunted into the x3 or x2 "bin" simply because they have to keep on track with the promised production numbers.
Having unlockabe cpu's doesn't hurt on the publisity front as well.

Re: Gigabyte 790X motherboard - am I missing something?

Yeah, I saw a report of AMD deliberately disabling 2 cores and making 550 BEs cos they were so popular. I'm eitehr gonna go x2 or x3 phenom II reckon.

Not all of the 550BE will unlock sucessfully, know someone who got one with 2 defunctional cores.

lol. It's not a disaster for me but I may as well go for the x3. All I need it for is playing cod4 max.
