Problem with Asus R2E - not posting when 8 pin ATX is connected

    hello,

I recently finished building my new system, but I've come across a problem. When I try to switch it on, the fans spin momentarily, and then stop; the system does power on. I do keep getting a "turn off" message on the LCD poster though.

I've narrowed it down to a problem with the 8-pin PSU connector. Whenever I remove it, the board boots fine. When I put it back, I get the same problem.

I've tried removing the board, checking for shorts, disconnecting everything then re-installing the components one by one, but nothing makes a difference.

Is there any solution to this?

    Thanks,

    Odai.

    I meant other than that.

I've spent almost 4 weeks RMA'ing stuff, I'm absolutely sick of it now.

I've seen other reports of the problem on internet forums - no luck finding a fix.

Re: Problem with Asus R2E - not posting when 8 pin ATX is connected

so you pull the 8 pin and it turns on but does not post, then connecting the 8 pin it does a 1 second startup and turns off.

you fried it and have to rma it, i had the same issue along with another lad on the asus forum.

nothing you can do apart from hope for the new revision board as there is a good chance you have the old version like i did.

all i did was turn mine on and it died.

it had run fine for months apart from the odd fail to post issue. rev c has been great so far.

    Aww, damn.

Thanks for your reply though dude.

What I don't understand is how retailers can continue to sell a defective revision board (I'm assuming you're saying all boards of that revision can be affected)?

How can I find which revision it is?

Re: Problem with Asus R2E - not posting when 8 pin ATX is connected

    Ok, I'll have a look.

Incidentally, how can I have fried it by plugging in the PSU cable? Are you suggesting that there was already a fault within the circuitry that would cause a short? If this is the case, then surely this indicates a serious manufactuing flaw with Asus?

How could it have happened to you all of a sudden too?

Re: Problem with Asus R2E - not posting when 8 pin ATX is connected

    hello,

I've enquired about this on the Asus forum, and they've told me an overcurrent situation can produce the problems I'm experiencing. I've tested the PSU incase it's what is causing this. The 8 pin connector tested at 12.13V, I tested multiple times, different pin combinations, shut down/restarted the PSU, all give me the same result.

Is this out of spec? Can it cause an overcurrent?

I tried testing the molex too (considering there's only 1 12V rail on the Corsair HX850, they both use the same rail), but, bizarrely, it tested at 12.08V.

    Any ideas?

Re: Problem with Asus R2E - not posting when 8 pin ATX is connected

its been put down to one of those things, i thought it was u on the asus forum, if you search you will find the thread i hijacked with the same issue.

as for overcurrent that sounds like your typical "i don't know so i will point out the obvious" answer.

mine gave an overclock failed, booted fine the next time then never turned on again when i got back from work, same problem as yours.

i dare say the mofsets are to blame as they have changed them in the revision.

its not like mines ever been hot due to full water cooling on the mobo and plenty of fans to move air. even the cpu pll cards cooled

Re: Problem with Asus R2E - not posting when 8 pin ATX is connected

I'll call Scan on monday to RMA it then.

Incidentally, do you really need full cooling for the asus R2E? From what I understood from building my system, the waterblock goes onto that copper heatsink the fin assembly used to sit on, and that is connected to the entire heatpipe assembly cooling the NB, SB, and MOSFETs. So wouldn't a single NB waterblock cool the whole motherboard? At least better than the default system anyways.

Re: Problem with Asus R2E - not posting when 8 pin ATX is connected

of course a block in place of the fins will cool it better than the fanless design, i wanted to go one step further and went for the full coolance kit for the board as i already had 2 DDC 18w cooling loops from my previous build, 2 rads and res tops, so i imported the full R2E kit from the usa to justify the shipping cost of the parts i couldnt buy in the uk

apart from the fact it runs really cool it looks the dogs danglies

    Fingers crossed then.

I'll barebones test it as soon as I get it rather than spend ages installing it and tidying everything up.
