A not so confused lady needs updating...

... my Desktop rig needs upgrading again...

I'm currently running what's in my sig/spec thing - it's my development box hybrid LAN rig and it does what it says on the tin.
However, I'd like to give it a bit more juice - I've got as high on the 939 socket as I can afford... so it's time to go higher

    The rules:

    • It has GOT to be AMD. No intels please. Maybe Triple or Quad core
    • Unfortunately ABIT fell out of the Mobo market, so I need to know what's good and what's not. - what's the best socket for future proofing? AM2+ or AM3?
    • RAM is usually Corsair - but will consider Crucial. DDR3 these days? What speed etc?

Prolly just looking at a Mobo/CPU/RAM combo for now... the rest will come later.

Assist a damsel in distress? (well not really... but been out of this game a long time now....)

The 939 rig is either staying as a spare box / server or being sold to my other half... but if they're fetching good money then I'll see about that...

hmmm... prolly about £300 ish (sorry, completely forgot about that information.

    AM3/DDR3.

£300 total budget for the CPU/Mobo/RAM?
& gaming only (btw your gfx card could do with an upgrade)?

Re: A not so confused lady needs updating...

What are you using the machine for?

For some tasks an up to date hard drive would give the existing system a speed kick. For games playing that graphics card is by far the weakest link.

A 3.2GHz quad core Phenom 2 955BE is £137, leaving about 90 quid for a fast motherboard and £70 for 4GB of DDR3 ram. But that might not be a balanced system for you, perhaps an Athlon X4 and a GPU refresh would be better for the same money.

Re: A not so confused lady needs updating...

I would keep the case and PSU as they both look good and would just cost money to replace than what you would get for them.

    With £300 I would probably go for a AthlonII x4 620 (~£72), AM3 Mobo (~£65) and 4gb of ram (~£60)
which should leave £100(+sales?) for HDD and a GPU.

The AM3/DDR3 has about 2 years in it with AM2+/DDR2 lasting only as long as the new AMD chips have a DDR2 controller onboard. The 2 years is based on CtV mentioning the next socket coming out in 2011; I'm no expert though.

I got a gigabyte mobo which seems ok. MSI, Biostar and Asus have some nice boards too.

Re: A not so confused lady needs updating...

My machine will be for Web Development mainly - It's not a "Gaming" machine, but a mid spec that's capable of running the apps that a web dev needs (Photoshop/Dreamweaver/illustrator/app server and a few browsers) without coughing and dying - but needs to run games reasonably too as it needs to go to LAN's with the H3XU5 team.

TBH my current PC does all this fine, but it's been neglected for a while and would like to spend some money on it.

Sounds like AM3 is the better way to go for futureproofing so far

Does the GFX NEED an upgrade or is it a nice to have.... I'm trying to do this in stages, and CPU/MOBO/RAM usually need to be done all at once. Whereas GFX can be done later (it does ok with the games I'm playing at the LAN - I'm not noticing any issues...) and my GFX card has always been the weakest link....

The HDD's are fine for what I need to do at the moment, so I'm not looking to upgrade those. It's more processing power I'm looking for.

Re: A not so confused lady needs updating...

I assume you do not need crossfire?

I assume that you graphics card is a PCI-E one??

This is what I would get:

    AMD Phenom II X4 955BE ~ £138

    http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx

    Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P ~ £71

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/GIGAB...770T-UD3P-MOBO

    4GB DDR3 RAM ~ £85

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/4GB-(...ered-CAS-9-DHX

I would run the RAM at 1333mhz using lower latencies.

Re: A not so confused lady needs updating...

Seeing as I have no idea what crossfire is, I'll say no.

Yes it's PCI-E as I had to upgrade gfx last time I changed board to the AN8 Ultra... http://www.trustedreviews.com/mother...Motherboard/p3

Ok, have gigabyte come a long way since they were pants? It's one of the brands that I tend to avoid... I'm willing to be proven wrong though.

You could always go for this Asus motherboard instead:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-...3Gb-s-RAID-ATX

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/171664

However the Gigabyte motherboard has got glowing reviews.

Crossfire is a way of putting two exactly similar graphics cards in parallel to improve performance in games. It can work quite well but not with all games. If you want less hassle go with a single graphics card instead and non-Crossfire motherboards are cheaper too.

I assume that you graphics card is a PCI-E one??

This is what I would get:

    AMD Phenom II X4 955BE ~ £138

    http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx

    Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P ~ £71

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/GIGAB...770T-UD3P-MOBO

    4GB DDR3 RAM ~ £85

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/4GB-(...ered-CAS-9-DHX

I would run the RAM at 1333mhz using lower latencies.

    This one.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.
