Help with new Build (Budget £800-900) and places to get me components...

Howdy folks!

Can you all be so kind as to help a poor fella out on his endevour to build a tower costing around £900? I don't need a monitor or extra peripherials such as a mouse or keyboard - Just the meat and bones of the tower. Saying that I won't be needing a DVD drive or OS for that matter.

Any spec help will be greatly appreciated. Also, I usually buy all my components from Scan, could you people furnish me with other vendors whom may give me more bang fer me buck?

What is your intended usage pattern for this particular machine?

Do you intend to overclock?

Do you have any perferences for brands and components (i.e. Intel over AMD, AMD over NVIDIA...)

Is your current OS Windows 7 and is your current DVD SATA?

Scan is usally the best place to go, but if you shop around you can get a better deal. I often by from OCuk, Scan, eBuyer and PCBuyIt to get the best deals. Scan tends to be cheaper overall most of the time (if you buy from one etailer).

The PC is intended for gaming. The OS prob will be windows XP - Win7 if I can afford it.
I would very much like branded products and would opt to go down the Intel route CPUwise.
I do intend to overclock, just to make the darn bugger futureproof.

Here is my recommendation.

All the decent graphics cards are on pre-order at the moment, sorry about that.

I included Windows 7 Home Preimum as if you install XP you won't be able to use all your RAM, and I included a DVD drive because I don't recommend you use an IDE one. If your current one is SATA, then just remove it from the build.

Consider upgrading the PSU if you intend to upgrade it in the future to an HX 650, but they are also on pre-order.

On crap I forgot the cooler! Here, you'll want an something like this. If you don't need a new DVD drive that should put you just under £900 with the HEXUS free shipping deal.

I wouldn't.

1. The RAM I linked is CAS 8, worth the extra over the CAS 9 you linked.

Ebuyer sells Windows 7 nearly £10 cheaper than Scan and so do many other places too. Ebuyer and many companies do free postage too.Scan tends to be quite expensive for software so I would not get it from them. If the OP is a student they can get Windows 7 much cheaper too!

Also the motherboard you specced is quite expensive and I would go for the Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R instead as it has good reviews. You do lose SLI support though.

That is nearly £40 saved! A few quid more and an HD5870 could be fitted into the budget too if the OP is diligent and sticks to a Core i7 750!! I have seen a few for around £290 to £300(these sellout very quickly).

Fair enough. I reason I didn't spec the UD3R, which is a cheaper board, is because of the arrangement of I/O. I'm anti PCI. PCIe FTW.

I think the OP has plenty food for thought regarding their build now!!

I am still surprised at how expensive the socket 1156 motherboards are especially since much of the logic which used to be on the motherboard is now in the CPU!! In theory they should be cheaper than the equivalent AMD motherboard as they probably need less components!

Thx guys for yer input. I'm still at a loss as to whether I should get the graphics card now or later. Is there likely to be a decrease in price after the New Year? Also was going to opt for water cooling - the Corsairs H20? What would you say?

H50, and it's good if ya wanna go for it. One thing through, do you have a current GPU you can use in the interum if you were to buy one later?
