    Re: custom built pc spec

This is what I would get:

    Phenom II X4 955BE ~ £127

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AMD-P...he-125W-Retail

    GA-MA770T-UD3P ~ £68

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/GIGAB...770T-UD3P-MOBO

    4GB DDR3~ £76

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...L9D-4GBRL.html

I would run the RAM at 1333MHZ using lower latencies

    HD5770 1GB ~ £116 to £120

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176938

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/175731

    Corsair VX550W ~ £63

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/550w-...anty-see-specs

If you can get an HX450W instead this would be a cheaper choice.

    Samsung F3 500GB ~ £37

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/500Gb...-Cache-8ms-OEM

    Coolermaster Elite 334 case~ £29

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Coole...r-Case-w-o-PSU

Sony SATA DVD rewriter ~ £16

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Sony-...Wx6-SATA-Black

    Edimax EW-7128G 54Mbps Wireless PCI Card ~ £12

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Edima...eless-PCI-Card

This build should be within you budget unless you need a copy of an OS!!

Check the Scan Today Only,Homepage Offers and Shop Offers web-pages as some of the components listed in the build maybe on special offer!! Also make sure that you get the free Scan postage you are eligible for.

If you need to get a copy of an OS then get an HD4870 instead of the HD5770 and an X2 550BE instead of the X4 955BE:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AMD-P...MHz-85W-Retail

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169206

I would recommended the X3 720 but it has gone up in price and is harder to get!!

OTH,this could be because the X3 740 is coming out soon!!

This should save you enough money for a copy of Windows 7:

This is what I would get:

    AMD Phenom II X2 545 ~ £63

    http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx

    4GB DDR3 ~ £77

    http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx

    SATA DVD rewriter~ £16

    http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx

    MSI 770-C45 ~ £49

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/MSI-7...dio-GB-LAN-ATX

If you do manage to unlock the X2 545 to a quad core I would not try to go too mad on overclocking as this motherboard only has 4+1 phase power. However Bit-tech does give it a good review!

    500GB Samsung F3 ~ £37

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/500Gb...-Cache-8ms-OEM

    Edimax EW-7128G 54Mbps Wireless PCI Card ~ £12

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Edima...eless-PCI-Card

    Coolermaster Elite 334 case~ £29

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Coole...r-Case-w-o-PSU

    500W Silverstone Strider ST50F-230 ~ £50

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/500W-...lar-cable-V-10

    HD4770 512MB ~ £61 to £65

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/179285

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173741

    Windows 7 retail edition~ £83

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Micro...-of-e-Scan-ISS

    22" monitor with DVI ~ £110 TO £115

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/22-Vi...680x1050-20001

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173911

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/174021

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169619

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/147718

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142697

Gigabyte keyboard and mouse ~ £8

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143771

Use your free postage from Scan and the free Supersaver postage from Ebuyer to keep to your budget. The whole shebang should be around £600.

If you upgrade to a 125W TDP processors I would not overclock with this motherboard. OTH, if you have a 95W TDP and below processor overclocking should be OK AFAIK. The X2 545 in its dual core form is an 80W TDP processor.

If you are lucky though the X2 545 may unlock to a quad core!!

It also maybe worth getting an aftermarket cooler at some point in the future if you intend to overclock your CPU or unlock it.

The more expensive motherboards have beefier power supply bits for the CPU than the one I suggested. This is the same with both AMD and Intel. Hence if you are using a quad core and overclock it a lot the power consumption will rise and hence stress this power supply bits more. If you are overclocking a dual core or lower end processor which has inherently lower power consumption these power regulation bits are less stressed.

For example the X2 545 has a maximum power consumption of 80W whereas the the X4 955 quad core has a maximum power consumption of 125W.

Also the X2 545 is basically a quad core with two cores deactivated. This means in some cases you can unlock it to a quad core although power consumption will rise meaning you cannot overclock as much as when it was a dual core as the motherboard power supply bits will be overstressed which is not good.

burrellhead - are you a student, in education or have a family member that is? If you are/have then you may be able to get a worthwhile discount on the OS.

See > http://www.microsoft.com/uk/education/studentoffer/ for more info.

Good luck with your first build!

Stick with the HD4770. An HD4670,HD4730,9600GT,9500GT GDDR3 and HD4650 GDDR3 are not that much cheaper and are far slower too!! Any card under these is really pointless for playing any games TBH and you might as well go for integrated graphics.

£60 for an HD4770 is excellent value for money!!

    Re: custom built pc spec

You could probably get away with having a less powerful card (or even perhaps an integrated GPU) yes, but the HD4770 will provide some longevity, and gaming at decent resolutions will be possible.
