upgrades for a utter shame
hello every one,
i have a bunch of questions of to ask from you all, here goes
i have a DFI DK x48-T2RS motherboard, and the rest of my pc is a utter shame
so i thought of getting some upgrades, with the all new dx11 hype
here are the upgrades
HD5770
q9550
AC freezer 7 pro (not many fit on to the mobo because of the heatpipes, plus on a budget)
*have generic 450w psu
questions-
No.1- no way i'm going on liquid cooling so, will i be able to clock the maximum out of the q9550 with a freezer7 pro,or should get a lesser of a quad & clock it higher
No.2- probably i'll get win7 ,is it possible to fix old a nvidia 8xxx series card to use as physix (or is it worth it since dx11 api is going to use opencl standard)
No.3- can anyone point me to a chart where they show processors wattage vs clock frequency
thank you,
it seems a handful...help is very much appreciated
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
Get rid of the generic PSU as it will cause you issues!! I would be looking at something like a Corsair HX 450W as a minimum TBH.
Th Q9550 will consume more power than an E4600 especially when overclocked.
Out of interest are you living in Sri Lanka ATM?? Just asking otherwise there would be no point in giving you links to UK stores!
Also,AFAIK Nvidia do a dirty trick where you cannot have mixed ATI and Nvidia cards in the same system if you want to run Physx.
BTW,DX11 is being released for Vista too so there is no need to upgrade to Windows 7!!

True, but I hear if you perform certain PC-related steps, this restriction can suddenly vanish. How bizarre ;).
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
okay ....
losing generic 450w psu noted,
thanks...
yup i'm in sri lanka,so finding a q9550 or hd5770 is nearly impossible or you'd have to pay outrageous amounts to get them from retailer
see for hd5770http://www.slmega.com/catalog/produc...(Juniper%20XT)
see for q9550http://www.slmega.com/catalog/produc...SLM67523373742
i'd figure it's easier to hop on a budget plane (US$100) and buy stuff from KL malaysia, maybe do a little sight seeing explore a new land...it's all win win for me:rockon2:
back to topic
so much can i push the q9550 with a freezer 7 pro:bowdown:
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
I would look at these PSUs from that website:
http://www.slmega.com/catalog/produc...SLM67516277694
http://www.slmega.com/catalog/produc...SLM67516397638
http://www.slmega.com/catalog/produc...SLM67516277642
Decent PSU companies;
1.)Corsair
2.)Enermax
3.)Seasonic
4.)OCZ
5.)PC Power and Cooling
6.)Zalman
7.)Silverstone
8.)Be Quiet!
9.)Antec
Other companies do also make good PSUs but it is dependent on the range they do and who makes the PSUs for them.
I would be looking at a decent 500W to 600W as it gives you some leeway with future upgrades.
Also make sure you do your research before you buy a PSU!!
I would try to get the PSU in Sri Lanka for warranty purposes.
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
As to how far you can push a cor2quad on a ACf7p = not much, esp if you want it quiet
Question how wide is your case? If it's 200mm or more wide then look for a tower cooler with 120mm fan.
(You need roughly 160mm from the top of the cpu to the side panel to fit in a 120mm tower cooler)
The ACf7p is still a good cooler if your case is not wide enough and you've got a dual core cpu but it really cannot cope with a quad core without the fan sounding like a wasp trapped inside your case.
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
Gonna add my (late) comments....
Do you really need a Q9550 (I know they are clearance now so if you can get a bargin grab it), however you could get something like a Q9400 for about £50 less, (slightly (0.5) lower multiplier, and same elsewhere), which would leave you more money for a better cooler and/or a new PSU (which it has already been pointed out is essential.
With the better cooler you could probably overclock the Q9400 to the same as or more than the Q9550 (AFANK dont own either).
For the PSU what Cat posted is right, something like this : http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/500w-...FC-RoHS-plus80 should be a good buy, possibly more power if you plan on going crossfire in the future. But it would be dissapointing to spend loads of money and then have your old crappy PSU take it all out.
That would eat up most of the money saved on lesser CPU, but an the couple of quid you could get something like this:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Xigma...-K8-AM2-Cooler or this
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Xigma...uad-Core-Ready
which should* outpreform the artic cooler 7 by far
finally for the GPU a 5770 would be nice, but I wonder if it would be worth doing the rest of the updates and holding off untill ndiva bring out their GPU's, and see what they bring to the table, and if that causes AMD/ATI to drop their prices or not, meaning you may bag a 5850 for the same price, or save yourself some pennies.
just a l8 thought
will
EDIT: sorry the sites were scan not the other site you listed :(
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
Just looking at the cooler on the site pubbaa listed, it's a really nice range, not sure on the prices/exchange rates
I spotted this one
http://www.slmega.com/catalog/produc...SLM67587713790
Rosewill FORT120 120mm Direct Touch CPU Cooler w/ 775&1366 Retention Brackets, Rs.8,900/-
It's a 4 direct heat pipe tower cooler, 120mm fan based and cheaper than the ACf7p ;)
I think you'll find it is the Akasa nero, a lot of the Akasa products are sold in the US under the Rosewill name.
For slightly more than the ACf7P
http://www.slmega.com/catalog/produc...SLM67587653950
Scythe MUGEN-2 SCMG-2000 120mm fan
Scythe still make some of the best, most cost effective coolers and their quality is rarly in question.
You may want to pick up one of the bolt through kits to go with it.
Depends if you can put up with push pins or not.
http://www.slmega.com/catalog/produc...SLM67587381674
Although what I said about case width still holds true, let us know how much width you've got if it's not enough for a 120mm tower cooler we can make some other sugestions.
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
The prices are quite high compared to the UK as SL is more of a niche market when compared to the UK. You are looking at around 180 Rupees to a Pound IIRC.
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
When I checked the prices for the 5770 they were fairly similar to the UK tbh, although I would expect them to be cheaper so I imagine that the OP probably could make a saving by going elsewhere.
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
thank you guys for your advice
okay first of all need a decent power supply, here's what i found at the local market place
a local seller has Seasonic 650w psu's for US$ 145 with 3 year warranty,since it's considered a good brand i will buy that first
i will postpone on buying a hd5xxx card, and instead will use the two hd3870 s which i could have not been able to run because of my crappy psu(never even tried)...atleast i could run borderlands much nicer, i run in 720p:undecided
as for the cooler and the cpu :juggle:
cooler of course can be imported through ebay, btw the area of the cpu socket pretty cramped up on the motherboard will that be issue with some of the models of coolers you have mentioned...just wondering because even the intel stock cooler has millimeters of clearence with the giant heatsinks of the mobo...
the cpu (hopefully in malaysia i can find a good bargain)
btw my case is a mid tower, nothing fancy
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
Just suddenly realised something, try overclocking that e4600 you should easily hit 3ghz with it, that may give you a good boost and cost you nothing ;)
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
Thanks for the contribution everyone i got the following if haven't mentioned before
Seasonic 650w psu
Intel Q9400 @2.66+coolermaster hyper TX3
& the two hd3870's that were lying around
*do i need better ram to overclock the cpu what i have is now, is 667 1gbx2 value ram( kingston) and how to set (fsb x M) on this
thanks in advance
Re: upgrades for a utter shame
That ram is not great and will hold back any overclocking, if I'm reading that correctly you currently have FSB 333mhz and are running the ram at 1:1 ratio.
So any overclock is going to be limited on how high the ram can go.
If your ram is running at stock 1.8v then you should be able to push it up to 2.0v and get the ram a bit faster.
But as always in overclocking, it's a long process of feeling your way forward.
An easy option would be to repace the ram with pc2-6400 (800mhz) or pc2-8500 (1066mhz)
remember on 775 overclocking, ram listed speed is twice the fsb, cpu speed is fsb x multiplier
So with pc2-6400 your potential overclock is 400x8 = 3.2ghz, pc2-8500 533x8 =4.2ghz before you even start overclocking the ram.
However you're unlikly to hit 4.2ghz so pc2-6400 is generally the sweet spot for most overclocking
