I would either go with a Phenom II or Core i5 based build and get an HD5850 or a pair of HD5770 cards in Crossfire.

    For example:

    DFI LanParty DK790FXB ~ £112

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/DFI-L...3Gb-s-RAID-ATX

    Has a pair of PCI-E 2.0 16x slots

    4GB DDR3 ~ £75

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...L9D-4GBRL.html

    Phenom II X4 955 ~ £125

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AMD-P...he-125W-Retail

    A pair of HD5770 1GB graphics cards ~ £234 to £240

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176938

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/175731

    Coolermaster CM690~ £60

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131551

    Samsunf F3 500GB ~ £36

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=1073587

A pair of HD5770 1GB cards in Crossfire is a powerful combination:

    http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles...?cid=3&id=3040

    http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/294...e_x/index.html

It is worth looking at these two articles comparing the Phenom II and Core i7 in Crossfire setups:

    http://www.modreactor.com/english/Re...re-i7-920.html

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ng,2403-3.html

The total comes to under £650 excluding postage. OTH,Ebuyer and Novatech have free postage and Scan has free postage available on orders over £20 excluding VAT once the OP reaches 20 posts.

Re: need advice (building a system)

I'm kind of thinking to go i5 and just reduce the price tag a little, but I'm happy with the result that I think it's worth it to stick to the current price..

i'll find a hdd and figure out the best option for the gpu before ordering.

thanks for your help everyone. if you have any other suggestions or hdd/gpu recommendations.. always welcome.

If you can afford it, do it. Can you sell anything to make way for your new rig?

Re: need advice (building a system)

I had a very similar dilema to you, and went for the i5 as I was able to get a Gigabyte GA-P55M_UD2 motherboard, i5-750 CPU and 4GB of corsair RAM for under £300. Combined with a 5850 for just under £200, I figured that the £250 I saved over a higher spec i7 system such as yours would go a long way to buying a new CPU/Mobo/RAM upgrade in a few years, when hopefully SATA3 and USB3 will be out and becoming useful, and by then I might actually need someting more powerful than the i5.

Good luck with your new build whichever components you choose.
