What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
Just found this on play
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/923679...y/Product.html
now granted only 1gb single stick, however 1333mhz cas6 :O_o1:
That cannot be right for only £18 can it?
I feel like I'm missing something :undecided
I've sent off an email to customercare@play.com (not easy to find out what that address was) just to check that it is cas6 and also find out what the voltages are.
They also do 2gb stick with the same listed specs for £30
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/923680...y/Product.html
If these numbers are correct then these are real bargins.
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
A 4GB matched pair costs around £60:
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/923679...y/Product.html
It seems decent value!!
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
i got
Quote:
2 x Crucial 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz/PC3-10600 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V 166995 Warehouse Invoiced Track £35.08 £70.16
so 8GB of 1333 for 70 squids back in July, higher CAS but much lower price
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
The price is decent, although unfortunate as it is and like MadduckUK says prices have risen!
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
Ok let me put it like this, 1333mhz cas 6 works out at 4.5ns
Which puts it faster the 1600mhz cas8 (5ns)
and only slightly behind 1600mhz cas 7 (4.25ns)
So that stuff would be faster and cheaper than the GSkill Ripjaw red (cas9) blue (cas8) and the cas 9 black
Only the cas7 black ripjaw would beat it and that costs £85 for 2x2gb
There has to be a catch or mistake in the listed specs because at cas6 that's the fastest 1333mhz memory I've seen.
That would make it faster and cheaper than anything Scan has in 1333mhz or their 1600mhz memory as well
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
but with it being play own branded stuff you can hardly go looking for confirmation elsewhere..
could a 1600 stick of cas 8 run at cas 6 if downclocked to 1333 then do we think?

Both good points, the memory is going to be rebranded play.com but who the OEM is . . . only way to find out would be to get some.
I don't know if 1600mhz cas8 could be downclocked to 1333mhz cas6 but the cheapest 1600mhz cas8 is the ripjaw stuff at £80, so for £60 for 2x2gb this is still looking too good to be true. :undecided
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
it is missing nice cool heatsinks:( You know you really need RAM with several kilograms of metal to disburse all that heat it is creating :P
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
I got 4GB of 1600 cas 7 Ripjaw (well its 7 7 8 7 24) for £75 quid a few weeks back but its coloured blue not black :)
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
Well I still haven't heard back from play other than an automated email with a ticket number.
So I sent them a new email with the ticket number as the title as instructed asking for an update/information on my request.
All I've had back is another automated email containing a new ticket number for my request on an update of the original ticket number.

Finally Play got back to me

Thank you for your email.

So basically they are sticking there own brand on stuff that they have no clue what it actually is.
My confidence in play just took a massive noise dive, just glad I've never had any major issues with stuff I've ordered from them up untill this point.
Just replyed expressing my dissapointment on play.com putting there name on a product they seem to know nothing about.
I'd not of been surprised if they were selling it as just some unbranded ram and they didn't know full spec's for it, but to take some unbranded ram, slap there company name/brand on it without any real clue as to what it is, I find shocking.
Given that running DDR3 over 1.65v on a socket 1156, for any extended length of time, runs serious risk of damageing your cpu, not knowing what voltage this memory is means I'll not go near it with a barge pole.
I'll still probably use play for games and dvd's but I don't think I'll be using them for hardware again.
Not unless the product is well known to me.
But then again I hardly ever get hardware from them as it's next to impossible to find anything on there website unless you are looking for one specific brand & model.

WOW 1333MHZ AT CL6!!!!! thts amazing, i never knew tht even existed
and u dont need a heat sink for memory running below 1.9volts....i had ddr2 tht run a 1.95 volts 24/7
with no heat sink
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
1.9v is a rather chunky overvolt on ddr3. mines 1.5 stock, overvolted to 1.6 by the mobo and iv stuck it at 1.7. i cant imagine there would ever be a need to go to 1.9
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
1.8v is JEDEC standard for DDR2
1.5v is JEDEC standard for DDR3
It's not uncommon for DDR2 to be rated at 2v or higher
And it's not that uncommon for DDR3 to be rated at 1.9v for the higher timings, the fact that both i7 1366 and AM3 cpu's can run the memory at thoes higher voltages gives them a big advantage over the i5/i7 1156.
And yes howareu I've not seen 1333mhz at cas6 anyware else, which is what worries me and why I haven't jumped on it.
EDIT: oh yes and memory heat spreaders are pritty cheap, I've used these before http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Coole...ader-(CRC-U02) they worked surprisingly well on my old ddr2 and under £3
I might get some of this memory just to find out more about it, I can always send them back under DSR if they are not what they claim to be.
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
I just got a pair these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=8&subcat=1387
I know it is OCUK and some of you would touch them with a stick but it seem like a pretty good deal to me for £81 inc del
2133MHz @ cas9 = 4.2ns, best I can find at any price.
I would have gotten the G.Skill rimjaws but the 1600@cas7 has jumped price to almost £98 is now kinda ridiculous, even the cas9 ones are over £80.
I couldnt bring myself to buy the Play stuff. Matched pairs now cost £75 (+£5 for heatsinks) arent worth it at this prices. With no voltage or oem info is kinda scary aswell.
Re: What am I missing on this DDR3 ?
wow i did well to jump on the ripjaw stuff when i did
