    New Quiet/Silent build

    Hey guys,

It seems to be that time of year again for me.. normally do a build around christmas and there's another one on the cards.

So I'm looking to do something similar to what I've done before but a fair bit more powerful, so definitely dedicated graphics this time.

Lets ignore budget but remember I like to stay sensible

Mainly after suggestions for components which will live with fairly low air flow from slow spinning fans, I would also like a passive graphics card (preferably out of the box) so I need to know if anyone is aware of current gen ATi cards which either can be run passive or are passive out of the box.

It's going in a uATX tower, P180 mini at most (size wise).

    Re: New Quiet/Silent build

How about a NZXT Panzerbox? granted it's a ggod chunk wider and slightly taller and longer.
But with the two big 230mm fans it's low noise + good air flow
    And full atx.

    Or howabout makeing something

    Re: New Quiet/Silent build

I want the best graphics card that is passive out of the box, preferably HD5750 or better but thats probably a bridge too far.

    Re: New Quiet/Silent build

Having a quick look at scan the best passively cooled out of the box I could find is a HIS 4650 which isn't exactly a gaming card. Reckon your best bet would be an aftermarket passive cooler unless someone else can find something better (which I'm sure they can)
EDIT: Quick google found this which looks promising

There's the PowerColor SCS3 HD5750 but it doesn't look like it's available yet.

    edit: beaten to the punch.

It is actually the opposite. 12cm is pretty much the ideal size such that the noise inside the case don't come out. Two 230mm it will be effectively as noisy as running it without a case.

Unless doing extreme overclocking, a few strategically placed fans will provide sufficient cooling to all the essential components even at very low speed.

I have a P180 with 8 HDDs (4 in 5.25"), 3x 12cm intake, 1x 12cm mid-case to blow at ram, 1x 12cm CPU, 1x 12cm exhaust. Couldn't hear it over the noise through my double glazed window facing the garden. All fans are Yate Loon at ~900RPM

No passive cooling card required. Antec P18x have noise-blocking side panels which will be sufficient to block gpu noise provided the cooler is dual slot.

    Re: New Quiet/Silent build

I thought you were abroad staffsMike??

    Anyway I suggest this build:

    Phenom II X3 705E ~ £91

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167111

    This is a 65W CPU.

    A mATX 785G based motherboard ~ £68 to £70

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169532

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/170277

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/170230

    4GB of 1600MHZ DDR3 ~ £80 to £82

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166995

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142388

    Sapphire HD 4670 Ultimate Edition ~ £55

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158546

    Enermax Pro82+ 425W PSU ~ £48

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/144083

    Antec Mini P180 Black ~ £63

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/140996

Of course you would need to add a quiet hard drive and optical drive too plus some fans.

    Re: New Quiet/Silent build

Yeah the plans are still going in that direction but it wont be until the next educational year, I have to work here for a year first

Plus, as I said in the last posts.. the prices of everything I like are a joke.. so all the electrical stuff is going with us

I like that setup CAT, would prefer a bit more poke from the graphics card but I might just sort something out with a 5770 + compatible cooler
