Sub 300 Gaming build
Alright guys, been a while since I posted on here :)
Looking to do a knew build to replace the one in My System.
- All its gotta do is play CODMW2 to a high level on a 24" Dell FPW
What I think I have available currently is:
- Corsair modular 350w
- Some form of ati mobo I used for a mates pc which hes now changed to go crossfire, forgot the name but will know on fri.
Since I've nothad any exposure to components for at least 6 months, I would really appreciate it if someone could throw a quick build on here for me.
Thanks again all
xx

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
Where did you get a Corsair 350W Modular PSU from? That's the first I've heard of such a thing!

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
Righty ho this is what I would get:
XFX HD 4870 512MB ~ £87
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169206
AMD Phenom II X3 720 ~ £90
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159071
Not many in stock so be quick!!
MSI 770-C45 ~ £50
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/165438
4GB DDR3 RAM ~ £76
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...L9D-4GBRL.html
Run this RAM at 1333MHZ using lower latencies.
OCZ 500W Mod XStream Pro ~ £55
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152009
This should do the job. I would re-use your old hard disk, optical drive and case.

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
Thanks CAT-THE-FILTH
The mobo i can get for 20 quid is a DFI LANPARTY DK P35-T2RS LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard. Its brand new and used it in my mates build.
Is it worth using that board or will that hinder me?
Thanks again

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
That's a good board but as it's Intel it means you would now have to get an Intel CPU and they aren't that cheap. With a P35 board you can overclock quite well. Perhaps add a E5200 to it as they're really cheap now (Roughly £40 IIRC) or get a E8X00 or Q8X00/Q9X00. However the latter do cost around £100-£140 for even the lowest clocked models but they perform REALLY well.
I've got to tell you that socket 775 boards are end of life though but to be honest you don't really need an i7 to play COD at decent settings, at 24" it'll count more on your graphics card.

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
Thanks Ulti, yeh tbh it only has to play CODMW2 on my 24 inch screen. Shame theres no1 on here selling a base unit. Im not one for overclocking as I havent overclocked for at least 5 years and prob way behind the times. So a straight speed out the box would be ideal

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
If you won't be overclocking and gaming only then E8X00 series is your best bet. Clock speed is likely to be the most important. And if you do go for overclocking, your DFI board is likely to get the E8X00 series over 4ghz.
A quad core isn't that useful for COD MW2, only useful for really heavy multitasking IMO.
If you wanna save some money then perhaps an E7X00 or E5X00 would do.
However, I just did a bit of research and the X3 720 does beat the E8400 in almost everything. Not to say that the E8400 isn't any good but the X3 720 has better stock performance.
Up to you where to go from here.

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
Hating to give props to Intel (although now they've settled with AMD I'm feeling slightly better about them) but the new Celeron E3200 (the E3300 is £10 dearer and has an extra 100MHz clock speed - not worth it!) is meant to be very fast for a Celeron, is dead cheap (£35) and (alledgedly, YMMV) overclocks like a thing that overclocks really well  I wouldn't normally recommend a CPU on the basis of potential overclockability, but since you can get a cheap DFI Lanparty mobo and you're on a budget I think it's worth it in this case!
One of those, 2GB DDR2-800 CL4 (DDR2 prices have gone through the roof recenty :( ) and a 4870 (as recommended by CAT) is probably your best bet, given how much you're saving on that mobo. With £20 for the mobo that comes to ~ £190, leaving you lots of wiggle room for a decent aftermarket LGA775 cooler (essential for getting the best out of that Celeron ;) ), HDD, DVD-RW and all those other little bits you need...

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
Thanks scary. As ive mentioned above, id ideally have a cpu that comes with a decent speed to start with as im not that clued up anymore.
- Pay 20 for the mobo
- Got a Wavemaster and a 500gig spinpoint
- My DVD/CD drive is fine
- So looks like i gotta go Intel, so the 8 series looks the best unless Someone on here wants to sell a Q core or something faster, i dont mind buying second hand parts.
- GFX - The 4870 has gone down again which is good.
- DDR2 or 3? Do I have an option with this board?

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
I would get a Q8400 or Q9400 IMHO:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164520
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148545
I would get 4GB of this low latency PC2-6400 DDR2:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143844
The HD4870 512MB has also dropped in price:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169206
The E8*** series are overpriced. More and more games are starting to take advantage of multiple cores so a quad core is a better choice IMHO than a dual core over £80.

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
Unless there are benchmarks showing that COD:MW2 benefits from multicore architectures, I'd go for a Core 2 Duo E8400 above a Q8/9400 for pure straight line speed at a slightly lower price. Its big advantage over the Celeron is the huge L2 Cache (6MB v 1MB), it has much higher out of the box clockspeed the the quad cores (3GHz vs 2.66GHz) plus it's renowned as a good overclocker should you go down that route later.

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
Cheers you two. Theres a guy in the for sale section thats elling a 8400, might go for that tbh. This could work out quite a cheap build!

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
Hexus FS builds are made of win :D I'm in the middle of one myself, although I think further acquisitions will have to wait until after Christmas... ;)

Re: Sub 300 Gaming build
Oo yeah, the E8400 in the FS section is at an affordable price I guess.
Then just as CAT says, pair it up with a 4870 and you're ready to go. You may have to get some RAM though if you haven't got any at the moment. PSU might also be a problem. The PSU that CAT linked earlier is really good, however if you do have a decent PSU (Corsair Mod 350W doesn't exist AFAIK) then you could probably skip that part out.
Only thing left would be RAM, as your motherboard uses DDR2 RAM it's going to be a pain sourcing 2x2GB RAM. You could get 4x1GB RAM as you won't be overclocking and it'll probably work out cheaper, especially if you get them second hand. Only thing would be that you might encounter problems if you get 4x 1GB RAM but it's not something a little BIOS tweaking won't sort out.
