Request: Intel i7 920 and 860 Power Consumption figures
I've read many reviews of both the 860 and 920, some comparing each chip, and there appears to be no consensus on power consumption. Half suggest that at a decent but not excessive overclock both draw the same power at the wall, while the other half suggest the 860 has a clear 30-50watt advantage.
Does anyone have either of these chips running at 3.6-3.8ghz and a power monitor? I'd like to know the idle and load figures.
Re: Request: Intel i7 920 and 860 Power Consumption figures
Just tested the i7 860 rig for you.
- i7 860
- Gigabyte P55-UD6
- Powercolor HD4870
- Noctua cooler + 2x fans
- DVD drive
- 1x hard drive
- 2x2gb memory
- Fan controller
At stock idle it pulls a whopping 250w from the wall, 70w of that is the monitor, this rises to 350w under load. Overclocked to 3960MHz 1.41 ish vcore gives me 360w idle and 470w load from the wall.
You can add your GPU onto that too if you are gaming, although the CPU usage won't be quite so high.
Re: Request: Intel i7 920 and 860 Power Consumption figures
Ouch :)
Cheers for the figures.
So that's 290watts idle when overclocked with a power hungry 4870. I guess the i7 860 and 920 really do consume almost equal power when overclocked. I'm shocked at the 90watt increase while idle though.
Re: Request: Intel i7 920 and 860 Power Consumption figures
My rig:
920 D0 @ 3.6GHz
ASUS P6T SE
2x HD4870 CF
6GB 1333MHz
DVD-RW
4x 120mm S-Flex 1200RPM
1x HDD 7200RPM
From the wall this machine sucks up:
Idle: 240W
Load: 760W
That's just the base unit, i.e. no monitor.

This is just madness...
My Q9550 at 3.6 tops at 320W with single 4870. at max CPU+GPU
You sure it did hit 760W? The max I've seen my 4870 draw is around 70A @ 1.2V-ish in GPU-z so dual 4870 + i7 920 shouldn't exceed 400W and other parts certainly won't use 260W. And 4x S-flex certainly wouldn't handle 760W...

At a guess overclocking the processor is messing up the speedstepping causing it to run at full tilt all the time, would explain the large jump.
Re: Request: Intel i7 920 and 860 Power Consumption figures
Either way, these power consumption figures for overclocked i7s are scary :) An 860 at stock is looking a much better option atm.
Re: Request: Intel i7 920 and 860 Power Consumption figures
I seem to remember that when overclocking one of the first things to turn off in speedstepping simpily because it can cause overclock stability issues.
Clunk, did you have speedstepping or any other power saving functions turned on? or were they turned off?

Everything turned on. At stock it was hitting the 26 multi and then dropping to a 9x with just over 1.1ghz.
Speedstep can indeed cause a few problems, but it's mostly at higher clocks. I only turn it off if it's breaking stuff :)

I was surprised myself, running benchmarking programs and playing games it only peaks at 400W. Running IBT and Furmark however...!
Re: Request: Intel i7 920 and 860 Power Consumption figures
My 920 clocked at 3.4 with a 9800GT (the exact details are in my system spec) draws about 210 or 220 watts when idle. Turbo mode does appear to interfere with speedstep. Turning off turbo mode saves 1 watt on idle! Not overclocking it saves 10 or 20 watts.
Putting the overclocked system under CPU load puts the consumption upto about 300 watts.
I should point out that the power meter was a borrowed one that then went wrong, so these are figures that I got a few months ago. I may not have remembered them entirely accurately.
Re: Request: Intel i7 920 and 860 Power Consumption figures
At 1.4 Vcore (BIOS), I idle at 305W from the wall with my Q9550 and twin 4870X2s (though it should be noted, the idle draw of a 4870X2 is similar to that of a single 4870). With one X2 fitted it is circa. 250W.

Holy snapping ducks**t Batman !
Where can I get one these meters ?
Re: Request: Intel i7 920 and 860 Power Consumption figures
I bought one from Maplin.
Re: Request: Intel i7 920 and 860 Power Consumption figures
Decided to go with an i5 750 in the end (I only need the extra speed for gaming anyway, so hyperthreading is unnecessary).
i5 750 @ 3.8ghz @ 1.325v with turbo mode on and using speedstep -> 4ghz single thread
corsair 650hx psu
4gb memory
2x 7200rpm hds
corsair h50
6x 120mm fans
ati 4770
idle: 130 watts
prime95: 250 watts
