HELP HELP My HD Powers up but i cant get to my DATA

    hi all

my had was fine on sat, i tried powering it up today to back up all my files using the akasa enclosure as always to the new ext HD.

    - windows 7 and vista installs the driver and then thats it.

    - it used to do the autoplay as ever. but now nothing.

    - there is power and i can hear it spining but is not seeking at all.

any ideas guys, is there anyway to retrieve my data even to send it to a specialist its got my uni work and pretty much my life.

    thanks

Right click My Computer, select Manage and then go to Disk Management...

In the centre bottom section is the drive listed?

At the very least, I would advise switching it off and leaving it well alone until you've decided what to do next .

Re: HELP HELP My HD Powers up but i cant get to my DATA

It sounds like ether a disk or controller failier

    How old is it?
If it's out of warranty then you can try opening it up so you can get the disk out and pulg it directly into your pc and see if you can access it that way.
And you'll find out if it's the disk or controller that has failed.

If it's still under warranty then which is more important, the data or the cost of the hardware?
If the data is not vital then RMA it under warranty, if the data is more important then void the warranty and open it up.#

EDIT: Portable hard drives are really not that robust in my experience, a knock or just general "thrown in a bag" can damage the disk, even when it's off, more so when it's plugged in.

Re: HELP HELP My HD Powers up but i cant get to my DATA

    hi

i rebooted it many times. no good.

checked the connections used different usb cable but no good.

i,m accessing it via the enclosure which is where its always been accessed from.

so i,m accessing it from the laptop (win 7), anyway no good at all.

i went in mange and then disk management, it says it cant initialise when i tried it gave me 2 option mbr and another. either one throws an error failed to initialise.

i gave to my mate to use it inside his pc.see what happens.

    - its about 2 years old.

    - its a normal 3.5 HD thats used inside the Akasa Enclosure, its out of warrenty and the data is more important not bothered about the HD, its been working for years and never had an issue with it till now, typical luck as soon as the new EXT HD it packed it this morning but on Sat was working perfectly. i did pick it up when i powered it down which i felt the the disk spining. no way taht would of done anything.

    - the akasa enclosure i tried another sata HD and itworked fine.

if we cant access is there anyway we can retrieve the data?

is the drive clicking at all?

the controller board on the drive might have had it. it is repairable you just need to find another drive that is exaclty the same. you can swap them over to get the data back
