    Final Spec + Questions

    Dear all,

Please find below my final spec and some questions relating to the build:

    • CPU: Intel i5 750 Lynnfield Quad Core
    • Power Supply: 650WHX Corsair
Question: Will this PSU suffice? Or do I need to upgrade to a 750?
    • DVD: Sony Ad-7240s-0B
    • HD: 1TB Samsung HD1038J Spinpoint F3
    • Sound card: Asus Xoner DS 7.1 PCI
Question: Will I need a sound card or will the one on board the mother boards suffice?
    • Case/Tower: Antec 300
Question:I hear this is one of best and cheapest available towers; however, will this case adequately house the MB and CPU cooler?
    • CPU Cooler: Corsair H50-1
Question: This is the first time I am going to use water cooling. is this cooler robust and is it very hard to install? Or shall I go for a air cooler?
    • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-p55-UD5 Intel p55(socket 1156) DDR3
Question: I am absolutely clueless as to what MB to get so I opted for this one - Is this the best MB available or can you guys recommend another?
    • Memory:G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz Dual channel kit
Question: Again, I was rather clueless as to which memory modules to get, so I opted for this one. Is this the best available?
    • GPU - Err, I left this blank as I am completely clueless as to what to get for a £100 budget any helpful recco's from you guys/gals will be greatly appreciated.

Well, I intend to order by the end of the week so any recco's and comments will be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to thank all of you guys for you valuable input,

    R.

Question: Will this PSU suffice? Or do I need to upgrade to a 750? PSU will do just fine.
    • DVD: Sony Ad-7240s-0B
    • HD: 1TB Samsung HD1038J Spinpoint F3
    • Sound card: Asus Xoner DS 7.1 PCI
Question: Will I need a sound card or will the one on board the mother boards suffice? Depends. For me, onboard is always good enough, especially on gigabyte boards, but its up to you, how sensitive are your ears?
    • Case/Tower: Antec 300
Question:I hear this is one of best and cheapest available towers; however, will this case adequately house the MB and CPU cooler? It will house it just fine, but there are a couple of good alternatives, the silverstone PS02 and the coolermaster elite 335. I prefer the looks of those.
    • CPU Cooler: Corsair H50-1
Question: This is the first time I am going to use water cooling. is this cooler robust and is it very hard to install? Or shall I go for a air cooler? This is a great cooler, easy to install and better than air.
    • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-p55-UD5 Intel p55(socket 1156) DDR3
Question: I am absolutely clueless as to what MB to get so I opted for this one - Is this the best MB available or can you guys recommend another? There are better ones but who cares? This one is good enough.
    • Memory:G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz Dual channel kit
Question: Again, I was rather clueless as to which memory modules to get, so I opted for this one. Is this the best available? Can we have a link? The Black edition is CAS7, while the others are CAS 8 or CAS 9. Lower is on the whole better.
    • GPU - Err, I left this blank as I am completely clueless as to what to get for a £100 budget any helpful recco's from you guys/gals will be greatly appreciated.
For £100 get the GTX 260 if you can spend the extra tenner, or maybe a 5770 for an extra 20 just as its cooler, smaller and draws less power.

Well, I intend to order by the end of the week so any recco's and comments will be greatly appreciated.

    Hope I have helped

    Re: Final Spec + Questions

Id ditch the sound card and I would recommend picking up a cheap 4870 or 4890 for graphics. As far as RAM goes the CAS latency doesnt make a huge amount of difference, just get whats cheapest.

    Re: Final Spec + Questions

    Looks good.
The PSU is ample for the components you're talking about.
I'd ditch the sound card as well and spend the savings on the GPU. Phage's rule #1 - always get the best GPU you can afford as they date the fastest of all components.
I don't know about the watercooling, but my Noctua fits in the 300 with room for a push-pull fan setup, as well as the tri-cools the case comes with.

I would imagine that there is easily enough room for the rad when you take off the tri-cool. Cases are very personal. Get the one you like the most.
    UD5 - Is a good board.
Ripjaw RAM - Good memory for the i5
GPU how much money do you have left ? I believe that ebuyer have a 4890 for £124.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

    Re: Final Spec + Questions

I think the Corsair H50s are meant to be a bit smaller than big air coolers so I'm sure it will fit fine.
Get some quiet fans for the 300 - it's quite a noisy case.
4870s are still good for graphics. If you ditch the sound card you could go for a 5770 which should run cooler and be fast as well.

    Re: Final Spec + Questions

I'm just putting together almost an identical system atm (same cpu/motherboard/psu/cooler).

The tubes on the h50 are VERY stiff and difficult to bend. Even in my large tower case I found it quite difficult to fit. The tightness of the tubes also limits the radiators placement/orientation. I've gone for a push/pull config, which is necessary to get decent cooling from the h50. Fortunately I have so many screws lying around I was able to make this setup work, as the h50 doesn't use standard fan screws. A £40-£50 air cooler would probably be an easier install, only need the 1 fan and provide similar cooling.
