    Hey

Trying to build a system for my brother. Budget of £300, only plays football manager, so IGP from a 785 should work fine, later on he can get a better gfx card if needed.

He already has psu (decent silverpower)
He already has keyboard mouse and monitor.

    He needs:

Hard drive, ram, cpu, case and dvd rw.

I got it at about £285.

    AMD 620 x4 athlon(scan)
    asus 785 mobo(scan)
    ddr3 1600mhz (ocuk)
    Samsung 500gb F3 (Ocuk)
case (cheap £20 akasa from scan)
120mm fan (£5 akasa from scan)

Can anyone beat this? He gets free win7 from uni, so that is fine.

    Re: Hey

You won't get much better for that sort of price, unless you somehow squeezed in a cheap GPU for hybrid crossfire or something else, although it's not entirely neccesary.

Could take a gamble on unlocking a dual core if you wanna save a bit

    Re: Hey

The L3 cache on the Phenom II helps for gaming purposes. Unlike the Athlon II X2 processors which also lack L3 cache the Athlon II X3 and X4 have half the L2 cache which is not great for gaming purposes.

    Phenom II X2 545 ~ £62

    http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx

    MSI 770-C45 ~ £48

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/MSI-7...dio-GB-LAN-ATX

    4GB DDR3 RAM ~ £80

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...tml?GSK-4G1675

Run this at 1333MHZ using lower latencies. You can also get cashback from Novatech using Quidco.

    500GB Samsung F3 ~ £34

    http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx

    Coolermaster Elite 334 case ~ £23

    http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx

Comes complete with one rear 120MM fan.

    HD4770 512MB ~ £58

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/179285

The total comes to around £305 excluding any postage.

    Edit!!

    This RAM may also work:

    Another edit!!

Changed the RAM in the Novatech link to one with better timings.

    Re: Hey

I would disagree here, he only plays football manager10, a multithreaded game, with only basic 3d. I can unlock the cache on it anyway can't I?

    Taken from another forum.

There are both native L3'less Quads in production (These will have AD in their batch codes, such as CADZC AD 0932 DPMW) as well as crippled Denebs (which have AC in their batch codes such as CACZC AC 0932 DPMW)

    Re: Hey

I have used the Zen on a few builds, a very good case for the money, either way a good build for the ££ and i doubt you could get better. If you really want 4 cores then i would go for the x4, there are no guarentees the x2 550 will unlock and if the game does fully utilise 4 cores then the, possibly only, 2 cores and l3 cache will count for diddly squat, if you get lucky and it does unlock to 4 cores then you will be laughing. The 620 overclocks very well and i had mine benching at 3.8 and prime stable at 3.5ghz (only primed it as i was selling it overclocked).

    Re: Hey

Well from benchmarks, the 550 beats the 620 in virtually everything. The 550 can hit 4ghz, and it has the chance to become a phenom II x4, so yeah?

    Re: Hey

For non gaming purposes the X4 620 is probably a better choice but for gaming purposes and software which does not take advantage of more than two cores very well the X2 545 is much faster.

Also, only initial batches of the X4 620 were based on the Deneb core(Phenom II core with L3 cache) and newer ones tend to be based on the Propus core(Athlon II X4 core with no L3 cache).

    Re: Hey

Well i saw that for gaming the increased clock speed and l3 helped the 550 beat the 620 in everything but multithreaded encoding test.

Isn't this type of thing more likely to be what football manager is about though, i.e. number crunching, you said yourself that it doesn't need the 3d gfx and from what i have seen it, the game, uses as many cores as it can get its mits on if you enable "threading" from the in game options.

At the end of the day i am playing devils advocate a bit, i liked the 620 i had and seriously recommend it IF you want a guarenteed 4 cores, and tbh from what you say it will be used for and what i have seen comparing the 2 chips, and you admit to too, if the 550 you get doesn't unlock to a quad you may well lose some performance in that particular game.

Might be worth getting one of those mobo's that allow unlocking of seperate cores if you are dead set on a 550, turn a dual into a triple if one core is fubar, was it asus bioses that allowed that?

    Re: Hey

Cheers Pete, looks like the mobo Blaine specced is capable of doing that with the appropriate bios so unless he's really unlucky the 550 could weel unlock to a triple or a quad.
