Want low noise, low Power ~ 500Gb and not too expensive. Tempted by SSD but too poor.

Triple your storage and go for a Samsung F2 EcoDrive 1.5TB for £72.
If ya REALLY REALLY want only 500GB, get a Samsung F3 for £37.
Oh and if you REALLY REALLY REALLY need it to be silent, you will want an SSD, storage is a bit crap but hey, it'll be silent, and fast.

If you want real silence decent ear plugs are a must!!

Another vote for the Sammys. Have 3 F1s and and noise that does come from them is hardly noticable.

Samsung ECo or WD GreenPower are good for large storage.
I like the idea of the SSD as a boot drive, 40GB models are coming out at good prices, and store media on NAS for a nice & quiet htpc. admittedly you won't be booting it all the time being a HTPC but SSD still feels more responsive than the SATA drives.
The only issue with that is that a NAS is noisier then the F2/3 drives!!
Unless of course, you can put it in a cupboard with a decent network connection

I've got samsung spinpoints in mine, very quiet. It's worth going for a larger disk imo. I think there are excellent value 1TB and 1.5TB drives around.
+1 for the Spinpoint F2s.
