Question GTA IV on full graphics running slow!

    Morning all!

I just bought GTA IV and installed it on my computer and went through all the rubbish of the downloads and the setting up of accounts.

But it runs with lag on the highest graphics I can get out of it. Do have a look and my specs and tell me why! It's a good enough computer surely!

    Thanks,

    $eamonk3y

The game does need quite a powerful system to run and is particularly sensitive to graphics card memory. What are your specs?

Re: GTA IV on full graphics running slow!

Your system does indeed look up to the job, so am a bit surprised it won't run well. My more modest system ran it well enough.

What resolution do you run it at?

Re: GTA IV on full graphics running slow!

Well I put it up to the highest resolution. I did lower it but the game shows how much it uses and that only lowered the bar a tiny bit...

Re: GTA IV on full graphics running slow!

Do you have all the latest patches installed? they made a big improvement... and the latest drivers for your card?

Even with the spec you have I doubt you could run it at the high detail settings (I don't think anyone can run it max?) its a ridiculously demanding game. It does look nice at medium settings though so the best you can do is play with the settings, decide which details things are the most important to you. I would also suggest turning off clip capture (under "game").

I have it running nicely on my machine with most thing on medium and some things, like textures, on high. You have a better GFX card than me so you should be able to up one or two things.

Ok - I'll give it a go with some new drivers and on medium. How much difference would changing resolution make?

Re: GTA IV on full graphics running slow!

GTAIV is a poorly optimised console port. TBH, from what I have seen it does not even look that brilliant on maximum settings and there are far better looking games which have similar or lower requirements.

Re: GTA IV on full graphics running slow!

Well I loved GTA3, GTA Vice City and especially GTA San Andreas so when I saw GTA IV for 9.99, I couldn't resist! I didn't have any problems installing although it took a while - I had heard it was a nightmare game but it's ok so far!

Use your screen's native resolution, don't go higher than that.

Also, use your graphic card's default settings in its control panel, see if that helps.

If it is still lagging, then disable AA / AF and see if it is improved...

Make sure you're not playing any games while anti-virus stuff is running in the background, any software like that taking up a lot of cpu power can cause problems too

I seem to remember this caused a lot of people problems - it was causing stutter as it was continually writing to the HDD to save the clips - it may have been sorted in a patch, but if you haven't tried this, I would agree that this is worth trying.

Also, with a 4890 I'd presume you're used to just maxing all settings in most games - as others have said, I think GTA IV won't let you do that no matter what hardware you've got. I've only got a 512 mb 8800GT, running at 1680x1050 and I just accepted the recommended settings. Ran smoothly for me, albeit I would have preferred a longer draw distance

Re: GTA IV on full graphics running slow!

you can try dropping the resolution to improve performance, dropping it right back to 1440x900 or 1280x720 should give a boost.
how good it will look is another matter, try it out and see for yourself

"V sync" is another good one to disable for a FPS boost.

ummm not really, only if the fps output is over the frequency of the monitor and then you tend to get taring which is something I personally really hate.
