if you want it for HL2 or Doom 3 or far cry (ie. direct X 9) your going to require a bit beefier card. minimum of 9600 or Nvdia equivalent

Below is link to toms VGA charts which show where each card fits into the scheme of things in terms of frame rates in popular games.

    http://www20.tomshardware.com/graphi...229/index.html

Decide which is fastest in the games you want to play and then check different manufacturers for features you want and finally retailers for best price.

You might be better off on a limited budget buying a Geforce 4 on ebay as some of the higher spec GF4's are still holding up very well.

I agree a old high end GF 4 is proably more capable than the two cards that you suggested something like a Ti 4600 would be fine. But if you really want one of those 2 cards you mention then I would go for the Geforce FX 5200.

What is your budget? A 9600 might be a better option, and not much more expensive.

Far better option. I read a review that suggest that th 9200 is only good for current games and not for next gen... Linky

As a back up card I have been using a Connect 3D 9200se - passive cooled so no noise. Its also got a DVI out which is why I've hung on to it cos I have a DVI connectable TFT. For the money they are a nice little card. Think the 5200 costs a little bit more if you need DVI on it. It won't play the latest games in full quality at anything other than slide show speeds but I assume you've realised that from previous answers. Olders better if you're going down the speed on a budget line.

for that price you could get 9800 Pro, the 9600XTs are around £100 now.

foxconn make them all anyway. arguing brand semantics with rebadged cards is really a waste of time.

and modyco, neither a 9200 nor 5200 will be able to run doom 3 or half life 2 at higher than minimum settings. out of the two cards, the 9200 is the better choice, despite only being a directx 8.1 part

please try to remain courteous, and try to have basis for your comments.

for reference, there is no "card designed for hl2". differemt companies either implement a particular chipset, or rebadge cards from an ODM, often with their own cooler and bundle. the difference between cards on performance is often moot. powercolor, crucial, connect3d, sapphire and gigabyte 9800Pros are physically identical, but for the cooler being a little different on the gigabyte. the same happened whrn the geforce 5800 was released, everybody was selling rebadged versions of one company's card. this is the way the industry works. laptops are another system where there isn't a huge selection as you think there is - of the hundreds of laptop manufacturers, there are just over four companies in taiwan that make all of them.
