CHEAP netbook suggestions
A friend of mine is looking to buy a netbook for her son. As for most people around this time of year, they don't have much money, so we are looking for cheap first. Other than that, it must have built in 802.11g and whatever OS is on it must have decent support for Flash player.
Second hand is okay, so if anyone spots a decent deal on ebay, please mention it.
She actually already bought one, (without any advice from anyone). It was an import through an Ebay shop. Its description says that it can handle flash games. However, it comes with Windows CE on it. Which so far as I can tell, doesn't have any up to date support for Flash. Obviously, if anyone can suggest a fix for this then that would be good too.
Re: CHEAP netbook suggestions
I would get the cheapest Ion based Atom notebook. The problem is that the single core Atom in most netbooks is very weak and as HD flash and video becomes more and more common it will start to struggle. At least the Nvidia IGP in the Ion notebooks will offload a large amount of the decoding off the CPU.

Dabs sell the excellent Acer One 16GB SSD for £133:

but you're better with this 120GB HDD model for £164 as the SSD is not the quickest

Re: CHEAP netbook suggestions
Acer Aspire 1. It has a slightly sluggish performance as with most netbooks, But, its advantage is that it has an 11.6" widescreen, so it makes it a bit easier to read than the smaller 10.1" screens. A bit pricey though at 260 to 280 quid.
Re: CHEAP netbook suggestions
Thanks both of you.
If anyone cares, she found a couple of new netbooks on ebay. I suggested a Dell mini (10" screen with XP home for £229) and also suggested the refurb found by mikerr.
She didn't like the idea of a refurb, and picked a Dell Vostro, very similar to the Dell I had suggested, but £40 (ish) cheaper and only an 8" screen which is being sold by a US based ebay shop.
Hopefully this one will work out better than the first. At least she tested it though. There is another couple that live near by, I don't know them very well but their daughter often comes round to see my kids, or to go on a PC. They are intending on buying both their kids laptops for christmas, I have offered any help that they want, from choosing, to testing. No idea what they have done about choosing and buying the things, but I think I am setting them up on christmas day.
